INCREASING CROP PRODUCTIVITY WHILE CONSERVING NATURAL RESOURCES IS ONE OF HUMANITYS MAJOR CHALLENGES. THIS IMPLIES CREATING SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEMS FRIENDLY TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN HEALTH, WITHOUT REDUCING THE YIELD AND QUALITY OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS. ONE OF THE STRATEGIES FOLLOWED TO ACHIEVE THIS OBJECTIVE IS THE USE OF PLANT BIOSTIMULANTS, WHICH ARE PLANT EXTRACTS THAT CONTAIN A WIDE RANGE OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS WHOSE FUNCTION WHEN APPLIED TO PLANTS OR THE RHIZOSPHERE IS TO STIMULATE NATURAL PROCESSES TO BENEFIT NUTRIENT UPTAKE AND EFFICIENCY, TOLERANCE TO STRESSES, AND CROP QUALITY.WE PROPOSE TO EXPLORE THE POTENTIAL OF BRASSICA AGRICULTURAL BY-PRODUCT AS SULFUR FERTILIZERS AND AS BIOSTIMULANTS FOR CROPS. THE BRASSICA FAMILY AGRI-FOOD INDUSTRY, WHICH INCLUDES MANY ECONOMICALLY IMPORTANT PLANTS SUCH AS BROCCOLI, CAULIFLOWER OR CABBAGES GENERATES A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF BY-PRODUCTS WHICH ARE AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF GLUCOSINOLATES (GSL). THESE GSL ARE SULFUR-RICH COMPOUNDS PRODUCED FORM SECONDARY METABOLISM OF BRASSICAS, WHICH IN ADDITION TO THEIR BIOCIDAL PROPERTIES ARE CONSIDERED PHYTONUTRIENTS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CANCER-PREVENTING PROPERTIES OF BRASSICAS.RECENT FINDINGS IN THE MODEL PLANT ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA INDICATE THAT GSLS CAN BE USED AS A SULFUR SOURCE TO MAINTAIN THE PLANT GROWTH BY THE REALLOCATION OF SULFUR ATOMS FROM GSLS TO PRIMARY METABOLITES SUCH AS CYSTEINE. OTHER RECENT RESULTS SHOW A NOVEL CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PLANT HORMONE AUXIN SIGNALING MECHANISM, GSL LEVELS AND DROUGHT TOLERANCE, SUGGESTING THAT GSLS COULD BE A SIGNAL THAT REGULATES PLANT GROWTH RESPONSE TO ABIOTIC STRESSES. THESE RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE POTENTIAL ROLE OF GSLS AS PLANT SULFUR FERTILIZER AND BIOSTIMULANTS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. BIOSTIMULANTS CAN ACT DIRECTLY ON THE PLANT PHYSIOLOGY AND METABOLISM AND CAN ALSO IMPROVE THE SOIL CONDITIONS, PROVIDING A POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON PLANT GROWTH. WE WANT TO OPTIMIZE TO EXTRACTION OF GSLS AND EVALUATE ITS EFFECTS ON PLANT PHYSIOLOGY AT DIFFERENT GROWTH CONDITIONS AS WELL AS ON THE SOIL PROPERTIES AND MICROBIOTA. THIS APPROACH CAN NOT SUCCEED WITHOUT A MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM BRINGING TOGETHER EXPERTS OF TWO DIFFERENT KNOWLEDGE AREAS (PLANT SCIENCES AND SOIL SCIENCE) WHICH DISPLAY HIGH LEVEL OF COMPLEMENTARY SKILLS BETWEEN THEM. WE WILL APPLY CUTTING-EDGE METHODOLOGIES OF BIOCHEMISTRY, PLANT PHYSIOLOGY AND MOLECULAR PLANT BIOLOGY, INCLUDING GENOMICS, METABOLOMICS, TRANSCRIPTOMICS, AND BIOINFORMATICS. SUCH SPECIFIC METHODOLOGICAL AND THEORETICAL KNOW-HOW ARE NECESSARY TO SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENT THE PROPOSED PROJECT. THIS IS A HOLISTIC APPROACH THAT GOES FROM SOIL TO PLANT, AND FROM THE MOLECULAR TO THE WHOLE PLANT LEVEL. WITH THE OBTAINED RESULTS WE EXPECT TO GENERATE FRONTIER OF KNOWLEDGE IN THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONNECTION OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY METABOLIC NETWORKS WITH PLANT SIGNALING AND GROWTH. THE ULTIMATE SCIENTIFIC GOAL IS TO UNDERSTAND THE MODE OF GSLS ACTION ON PLANT DEVELOPMENT AND SOIL DIVERSITY.THE PROPOSAL ALSO HAS AN IMPORTANT SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT AS IT CONTRIBUTES TO: A) THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY GIVING BRASSICA WASTE A MORE APPROPRIATE OR BETTER USE AS A BIOSTIMULANT/FERTILIZER IN THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR; B) CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION AS THIS WASTE DOES NOT END UP IN LANDFILLS OR IS INCINERATED, AND A FERTILIZER THAT IS NOT CHEMICALLY SYNTHESIZED IS OBTAINED; C) A MORE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IMPROVING FOOD SECURITY AND PEOPLES HEALTH; D) JOB CREATION.
