THE SUBPROJECT 1, ENTITLED "SUSTAINABLE ENCAPSULATION USING PLANT-DERIVED BIOPOLYMERS FOR AGRICULTURAL APPLICATIONS", FOCUSES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENCAPSULATION STRATEGIES OF AGROCHEMICAL AGENTS (PLANT PROTECTION PRODUCTS, BIOESTIMULANTS, AND FERTILIZERS) WITH BIOPOLYMERS, SUCH AS LIGNIN AND CELLULOSE. LIGNOCELLULOSE-DERIVED POLYMERS ARE BEGINNING TO BE USED IN ENCAPSULATION OF CONTROLLED-RELEASE FERTILIZERS (CRFS), PESTICIDES, AND BIOACTIVE PRODUCTS. THE MAIN SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE OF NATURAL LIGNOCELLULOSE POLYMERS IS THAT THEY CAN BE DEGRADED BY SOIL MICROORGANISMS, RESULTING IN ENVIRONMENTALLY NON-TOXIC PRODUCTS, COMPARED WITH THEIR NON-DEGRADABLE SYNTHETIC COUNTERPARTS. HOWEVER, THE COMPLEXITY AND DIVERSITY OF NATURAL FEEDSTOKES, SUCH AS LIGNOCELLULOSE BIOMASS HAS DERIVED IN THE UNDERUTILIZATION OF ITS COMPONENTS, IN PARTICULAR OF LIGNIN, WITH A VERY COMPLEX STRUCTURE AND COMPOSITION. THE CHEMICAL MODIFICATIONS IN LIGNIN STRUCTURE ARE DIFFERENT DEPENDING ON WHICH EXTRACTION METHOD IS USED. ALL OF THESE FACTORS CAUSE AN IMPORTANT LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT WHAT TYPE OF FEEDSTOCK IS SUITED TO PRODUCE NANO- OR MICROCAPSULES. ANOTHER CRUCIAL FACTOR IS THE PROCESSABILITY OF LIGNIN. THE HIGH POLYDISPERSITY IN THE LIGNIN CHAINS RESULTS IN SEVERAL FRACTIONS THAT BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY IN TERMS OF THERMAL AND SOLUTION PROCESSING, MAKING DIFFICULT TO STANDARDIZE THE PROCESSING CONDITIONS FOR LIGNIN. SO FAR, THE IMPLANTATION OF SUCH STRATEGIES IN COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION LINES REMAINS A CHALLENGE. THEREFORE, ENCARNA WILL DEVELOP NOVEL AND POTENTIALLY SCALABLE CHEMICAL ROUTES TO ENCAPSULATE PLANT PROTECTION PRODUCTS UTILIZING LIGNIN RICH LIGNOCELLULOSE WASTE. MICRO- AND NANOENCAPSULATION WILL BE CARRIED OUT VIA MINIEMULSION TECHNIQUES, WHICH HAVE THE ADVANTAGE OF A GREAT VERSATILITY FOR USE WITH HYDROPHILIC AND HYDROPHOBIC SYSTEMS. IN ADDITION, THESE TECHNIQUES ALSO ALLOWS THE ENCAPSULATION OF THE CARGO SIMULTANEOUSLY TO THE CAPSULE FORMATION, WITHOUT NEED OF ANY POST-LOADING PROCEDURE (ALTHOUGH POST-LOADING CAN ALSO BE CONDUCTED). RELEASE STUDIES OF THE ENCAPSULATED SUBSTANCES, AS WELL AS PHYTOTOXICITY EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED TO OPTIMIZE MATERIAL COMPOSITION AND SUITABILITY FOR THE FINAL APPLICATION. THE RESEARCHERS FORM THE ICMUV TEAM WILL LEAD THE BIOMASS SELECTION AND THE ENCAPSULATION PROCESS. THE TEAM MEMBERS OF THE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF VALENCIA (UPV), LONG-TERM COLLABORATORS OF THE ICMUV GROUP, WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE PROJECT WITH ADVANCE CHARACTERIZATION METHODS OF THE RESULTING MATERIALS (MAINLY ADVANCED THERMAL ANALYSIS AND DIELECTRIC SPECTROSCOPY). ON THE OTHER HAND, THE AGRONOMY TEAM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ALMERIA (UAL) WILL PROVIDE THE NECESSARY EXPERTISE TO SELECT SUITABLE RELEVANT COMPOUNDS OF AGRICULTURAL INTEREST AND TO STUDY THEIR DELIVERY MECHANISMS IN PLANTS.
