Descripción del proyecto
Vertebral compression fracture (VCF) is a high impact disease with significant societal and economic costs. The annual direct economic burden of VCFs in Europe is € 37 billion. For VCF decreased quality of life is reported since the affliction is associated with severe morbidities, such as chronic disabling pain. Surgical intervention can stabilize the vertebra and prevent immobility due to the fracture. In the current treatment the vertebra is filled with special bone cement. Due to the relatively high risk of dangerous complications (~ 1-5%), alternatives to this treatment are being sought.
Amber Implant sees a huge market opportunity to revolutionize VCF treatment. For this, Amber Implants is developing an expandable osseo-inductive spinal implant called the AIM+, to restore a fractured vertebra to its original height and the spinal column’s optimal anatomy without the use of bone cement.
To efficiently and successfully develop the AIM+ Amber Implants seeks to expand the in-house knowledge on medical engineering and aims to acquire expertise on anatomy/biology and quality assurance & control. Up till now the company has been relying on costly external expertise. Internal expertise will provide the flexibility to adjust and optimize validation procedures and to optimally design the AIM+.
The company needs to add biological expertise to successfully develop a model to predict osseointegration. Furthermore, skills and knowledge on human anatomy are sought to facilitate in-house preclinical testing. The integration of novel expertise and knowledge of the IA is expected to give Amber Implants a significant advantage on the market.
The IA will play an important role in the structure of the company and he/she can have impact on the strategy and success of Amber Implants. The position will provide the IA with an international network in the medical industry and he/she will be able to extend his/her expertise on medical engineering and medical biology.
