Descripción del proyecto
This research investigates the construction, the evolution and the development of settlement spaces from the Republican to the Late Antique times in the area of the city of Rome, which is characterized by the extra-mural passage of the Appian way. It seeks to expand our knowledge of the critical area that delineates the passage between the urban and the suburban spaces of the ancient city. Its principal object is the contextual analysis of the suburban territory of the via Appia with the aim to reconstruct, in a diachronic way, the settlement dynamics that could attest the active spatial relationships between the urban and the suburban area. An important secondary goal is to define the functional zoning of this area and the changes in the use of places, outlining how historical artefacts can relate to new spatial programs. More generally, this is an investigation into the ways in which structures and places and their internal components were spatially organised. Within the study of spaces, the project explores the nexus of social, political and economic flows with the result of assessing the interaction and integration of the city and its hinterland. To achieve these goals, the project focuses on all ambiguous connections between the places that are located in the critical area between the urban and the suburban spaces. Among these places, an archaeological site will be chosen as a case study of the phenomenon: the systematic analysis of its spatial and social connections with the whole area and in a diachronic way will enable us to reconstruct the settlement dynamics of the territory through time. The project is thus based on two principal spatial domains of data: geographic, territorial or macro-scale data and monumental or micro-scale data. A holistic approach has been chosen for this investigation and visualization of the whole area, and a monographic approach has been selected for querying and visualizing the case study.
