THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROPOSAL ENTITLED PREPARATION PHASE OF HIGH-POWER RAMAN LIDAR DEVELOPMENT FOR DAYTIME STUDIES OF AEROSOL-CLOUD INTERACTIONS AND FEEDBACKS (PRE-HPRL_AEROCLOUD) IS TO PREPARE A COMPETITIVE APPLICATION TO THE NEXT EUROPEAN RESEARCH COUNCIL (ERC) CALL, PARTICULARLY IN THE CONSOLIDATOR GRANT, ACTUALLY, THE PROPOSAL TO ERC CONSOLIDATOR GRANT WILL BE ENTITLED HIGH-POWER RAMAN LIDAR DEVELOPMENT FOR DAYTIME STUDIES OF AEROSOL-CLOUD INTERACTIONS AND FEEDBACKS (HPRL_AEROCLOUD), THIS PROPOSAL IS WITHIN THE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES AND WILL FOCUS ON ADDRESSING CURRENT CHALLENGES IN THE EARTH¿S ATMOSPHERE, PARTICULARLY IN IMPROVING OUR CURRENT UNDERSTANDING OF AEROSOL-CLOUDS INTERACTIONS AND FEEDBACKS, IN PRE-HPRL_AEROCLOUD I WILL USE ALL MY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN AEROSOL SCIENCE AND IN REMOTE SENSING TECHNOLOGY TO IDENTIFY CURRENT NEEDS IN AEROSOL SCIENCES, PARTICULARLY IN AEROSOL-CLOUDS INTERACTION, AND PROPOSE THE MOST APPROPRIATE WAY TO ADDRESS THESE NEEDS USING STATE-OF-THE ART AND LATEST AND INNOVATIVE ADVANCES IN REMOTE SENSING TECHNOLOGY, I HIGHLIGHT THAT THE BASE OF THE PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A UNIQUE, FEASIBLE AND INNOVATIVE MULTI-WAVELENGTH RAMAN LIDAR FOR OBTAINING ACCURATE PROFILES OF AEROSOLS AND CLOUDS DURING DAYTIME, THESE BASE WILL BE THE CORE OF THE PROJECT AND WHERE THE REST OF THE PILLARS ARE BUILD UPON, THE HIGH-POWER MULTI-WAVELENGTH RAMAN LIDAR FOR DAYTIME MEASUREMENTS DOES NOT EXIST YET AND ITS DEVELOPMENT, DEPLOYMENT AND THE SET OF MEASUREMENTS I PLAN TO ACQUIRE WILL BE OF GROUND-BREAKING NATURE IN THE SENSE THAT WILL PERMIT TO OBTAIN ACCURATE VERTICALLY-RESOLVED AEROSOLS OPTICAL AND MICROPHYSICAL PROPERTIES IN THE PRESENCE OF CLOUDS, AND MORE SPECIFICALLY, THE CAPACITY OF THESE AEROSOLS TO ACT AS CCN AND IPN, MOREOVER, SUCH SYSTEM WILL PERMIT TO OBTAIN VERTICAL STRUCTURE OF CLOUDS OF DIFFERENT TYPES SUCH AS MIXED-PHASE AND CIRRUS CLOUDS, WITH IS NOT POSSIBLE YET DUE TO THE LIMITATION OF CURRENT LIDAR SYSTEMS IN PENETRATING THICK CLOUDS, THE BREAKTHROUGH IN CLOUDS STUDIES OF THE LIDAR SYSTEM I PLAN TO DEVELOP IS THAT WILL PERMIT THE SEPARATION BETWEEN ICE AND LIQUID COMPOSITION OF THE CLOUDS, OPENING NEW POSSIBILITIES IN THE STUDY OF ICE-CRYSTALS FORMATION AND OF SUPERCOOLED LIQUID WATER, FINALLY, ALL THE MEASUREMENTS I PLAN TO ACQUIRE IF THE HPRL-AEROCLOUD IS FUNDED I WILL USE THE NU-WRF THAT INCLUDES THE LATEST STATE-OF-THE-ART MODELING CAPABILITIES ADDRESSING THE QUESTIONS RELATED TO EACH PILLAR WILL BE DONE BY ACCOMPLISHING THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: COMPUTATION OF KERNEL FUNCTIONS FOR NON-SPHERICAL PARTICLES, PARTICULARLY FOR POLARIZED LIGHT, CHARACTERIZATION OF THE VERTICAL PROFILE OF AEROSOL MICROPHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND THEIR CAPABILITY TO ACT AS CCN AND IPN, BOTH FOR DAYTIME AND NIGHTTIME STUDY OF THE FORMATION OF MIXED-PHASE AND CIRRUS CLOUDS, SUPERCOOLED LIQUID WATER AND ICE CRYSTALS AEROSOL-CLOUDS INTERACTIONS STUDIES BY DATA ASSIMILATION, AEROSOL-CLOUDS INTERACTIONS\HIGH-POWER LIDAR
