THIS PROJECT FORMS PART OF A LONG-TERM PROGRAMME OF RESEARCH BEING CARRIED OUT BY JC AND OP TOGETHER WITH DIEGO GONZALEZ INTO THE APPLICATION OF DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS TECHNIQUES TO BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, THE CASES BEING STUDIED BY THE PIS, WHOSE CONTINUED FINANCING WE REQUEST WITH THIS PROJECT APPLICATION -DNA, THE AUDITORY SYSTEM, NACRE, LEFT-RIGHT SYMMETRY BREAKING, AND SO ON- HAVE BEEN CHOSEN BY US AS REPRESENTATIVE AND INTERESTING EXAMPLES FOR OUR STUDY OF APPLYING DYNAMICAL-SYSTEMS TECHNIQUES TO BIOLOGY WITH A TWOFOLD PURPOSE: THE UNDERSTANDING OF EACH CASE IS OF INTRINSIC INTEREST FOR DIFFERENT PARTICULAR BIOLOGICAL FIELDS; AND MOREOVER, EACH FORMS A PART OF THE MORE GENERAL WHOLE AND MOVES US FORWARD TOWARDS OUR LONG-TERM GOAL OF THE MATHEMATIZATION OF BIOLOGY THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF IDEAS FROM DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS, SOME OF THESE DYNAMICAL-SYSTEMS TECHNIQUES AND METHODS MUST BE CONCURRENTLY DEVELOPED ALONGSIDE THE BIOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS -SUCH IS THE CASE OF THREE-FREQUENCY DYNAMICS WE HAVE APPLIED TO THE AUDITORY SYSTEM-, SO THE MARRIAGE OF DYNAMICS AND BIOLOGY DRIVES FORWARD NOT ONLY THE APPLICATION FIELD BUT ALSO THE PARENT FIELD OF DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS ITSELF, DINAMICA\BIOLOGIA
