THE POOR PREDICTION CAPACITY FOR END-POINT LEVELS IS TODAY A STRONG LIMITATION WHEN CONSIDERING BIOREMEDIATION AS A VIABLE OPTION TO TREAT SOIL POLLUTION BY POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS (PAHS), OFTEN THE RESIDUES ARE ENRICHED IN COMPONENTS WITH THE HIGHEST ASSOCIATED RISK, THOSE CONTAINING 4 OR MORE AROMATIC RINGS AND THEIR ALKYL DERIVATIVES, ALSO, RECENT WORKS POINT OUT THAT PAH POLLUTED SITES CONTAIN SUBSTANTIAL CONCENTRATIONS OF PARTIALLY OXIDIZED DERIVATIVES, OFTEN MORE AVAILABLE AND LESS BIODEGRADABLE THAN THEIR PARENT PAHS, THUS THE DISCUSSION IS OPEN ON WHETHER THEY SHOULD BE INCLUDED WHEN CONSIDERING BIOREMEDIATION EFFICIENCY AND RISKS, THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO REDUCE THE ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS POSED BY PAHS UP TO ACCEPTABLE LEVELS THROUGH NEW BIOTECHNOLOGICAL APPROACHES INVOLVING THE EXPLOITATION AND STIMULATION OF MICROBIAL CATABOLIC REACTIONS OPERATING IN RHIZOSPHERES, THE PROJECT IS CONCEIVED AS A SERIES OF THREE SEQUENTIAL ACTIVITIES: 1) PROSPECTING, 2) EVALUATION AND 3) EXPLOITATION OF MICROBIAL RHIZOSPHERE FUNCTIONS, NEW IN THIS APPROACH IS THE USE OF MOLECULAR COMMUNITY ANALYSES TO SCREEN, OBTAIN AND MONITOR MICROBIAL POPULATIONS HOLDING NEW CAPABILITIES TO BE EXPLOITED IN NOVEL BIOREMEDIATION STRATEGIES, INCLUDING THE APPLICATION OF SPECIFIC TAILORED INOCULA AND/OR THE STIMULATION OF CATABOLIC FUNCTIONS WITH OIL PHASES THAT BOTH FACILITATE SUBSTRATE MOBILIZATION AND SERVE AS CO SUBSTRATES IN CO-METABOLIC REACTIONS, THE EFFICIENCY OF THE PROPOSED TECHNOLOGIES WILL BE ASSESSED BY MONITORING THE EVOLUTION IN CONCENTRATION OF BOTH PAH AND PAH-METABOLITES, BY MEANS OF AN ANALYTICAL PROTOCOL THAT WILL BE DEVELOPED AND VALIDATED IN THE PROJECT, THE FINAL GOAL IS THEREFORE TO IMPROVE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY BY REACHING LOWER BIOREMEDIATION END-POINTS THAN THOSE DEMANDED BY CURRENT LEGISLATION AND AN ACCURATE ASSESSMENT OF THE CONCENTRATION AND FATE OF THEIR OXIDATION PRODUCTS, TRANSFER TECHNOLOGY TO END-USERS IS CONSIDERED THROUGH THE PARTICIPATION OF A SPANISH REMEDIATION COMPANY, BIODEGRADACION\HAPS\BIOREMEDIACION\BIODISPONIBILIDAD\DESCONTAMINACION\SUELOS CONTAMINADOS\ESTRUCTURA DE COMUNIDADES MICROBIANANS\RIZOSFERA
