NONLINEAR OPTICAL SYSTEMS OFFER A WEALTH OF EXCITING SCENARIOS THAT SPAN, JUST TO CITE A FEW, FROM THE GENERATION OF ULTRASHORT COHERENT PULSES FROM LASERS AND OPTICAL PARAMETRIC OSCILLATORS, TO THE PRODUCTION OF ENTANGLED AND SQUEEZED STATES OF LIGHT, PASSING THROUGH COHERENT IMAGING BASED ON TRANSIENT NONLINEAR RESPONSES, ALL OF THIS WITH IMPLICATIONS IN METROLOGY, MICROSCOPY, INFORMATION AND SENSING IN GENERAL. AS WELL, NONLINEAR PHOTONIC SYSTEMS ARE IDEAL PLATFORMS FOR TESTING AND DEVISE COMPLEX QUANTUM SCENARIOS WITH POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS. OUR GROUP HAS LONGSTANDING EXPERTISE IN THE STUDY OF THOSE TYPES OF SYSTEMS, MAINLY IN CONNECTION WITH THEIR NONLINEAR DYNAMICS, AND THIS BASIC-SCIENCE PROJECT AIMS AT GENERATING NEW AND RELEVANT SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE IN THOSE AREAS WHILE SEARCHING FOR PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS. THE THREE MAIN OBJECTIVES ARE BASED ON CUTTING-EDGE RESULTS THAT WE HAVE RECENTLY OBTAINED: (I) COMPLEX-FIELD MEASUREMENTS IN NONLINEAR-CRYSTAL-BASED ADAPTIVE INTERFEROMETERS, (II) COHERENT MODE-LOCKING DYNAMICS OF LASERS AND OPTICAL PARAMETRIC OSCILLATORS, AND (III) NON-TRIVIAL TEMPORAL DYNAMICS IN THE QUANTUM REGIME. WE HOPE THAT THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO ADVANCE FUNDAMENTAL SCIENCE AND ITS APPLICATIONS.
