IN THE LAST YEARS, THE VALUE FOR THE SPANISH OPEN-FIELD HORTICULTURE REACHED 7,000 MILLION EUROS, WITH A PRODUCTION OF MORE THAN 14.5 MILLION TONS, BEING THE LARGEST HORTICULTURAL EXPORTER WITH A PROGRESSIVE CONSOLIDATION IN THE MAIN MARKETS OF EUROPEAN CONSUMPTION. AGRICULTURE IN EUROPE REQUIRES ANNUALLY 5 MILLION TONS OF NITROGEN-BASED (N) FERTILIZERS, GENERATING A SERIOUS AND WELL-KNOWN CONTAMINATION PROBLEM DUE TO AN ACCUMULATED EXCESS OF NITRATES IN WATER BODIES, BESIDES ITS HIGH REQUIREMENTS OF WATER RESOURCES. MOST EFFORTS TO IMPROVE NUTRIENT AND WATER USE EFFICIENCY IN AGRICULTURE HAVE BEEN FOCUSED ON CARRYING OUT EFFICIENT FERTIRRIGTION SCHEDULING PROTOCOLS, BUT LOWER ENERGY COST ALTERNATIVES SHOULD BE ENHANCED TO ACCOMPLISH THE ENVIRONMENTAL AIMS FOR AN ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION COMPILED IN REGLAMENTO (UE) 2020/852. COOPERA INTENDS TO CONTRIBUTE TO AN ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION IN THE AGRO-FOOD SECTOR PROVIDING NATURE-BASEDSOLUTIONS (NBS). SPECIFICALLY, IT PROPOSES USING ECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE OF NATURAL PLANT COMMUNITIES IN SEMIARID ENVIRONMENTS IN ORDER TO DESIGN AND MONITOR OPTIMAL INTERCROPPING SYSTEMS, QUANTIFYING ITS POTENTIAL TO ENHANCE A MORE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE BY REDUCING THE USE OF WATER AND FERTILIZERS IN ACRO-ECOSYSTEMS. THE FOUR MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSAL ARE:1. USE PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE ON CO-OCCURRENCE PATTERNS OF SPECIES FAMILIES IN SEMIARID ENVIRONMENTS TO DESIGN OPTIMAL PAIRS OF CROP SPECIES FOR INTERCROPPING.2. EXPERIMENTALLY TEST THE SUCCESS OF THE DIFFERENT COMBINATION OF SPECIES BASED ON THE CO-OCCURRENCE OF THEIR WILD RELATIVES AND THEIR PHYLOGENETIC DISTANCE, WHICH TEND TO ENHANCE N TRANSFER BETWEEN PLANTS. 3. IMPROVE THE WATER AND N USE EFFICIENCY, AND QUANTIFY THE REDUCTION ON EXTERNAL APPLICATION OF N FERTILIZATION AND IRRIGATION WATER POTENTIALLY COMPENSATED BY THE INTERCROPPING DESIGNS.4. IMPLEMENT AND VALIDATE A QUANTUM-DOTTRACKING TECHNIQUE TO ASSESS PLANT-PLANT N TRANSFER UNDER INCREASINGLY COMPLEX AND DYNAMIC CONDITIONS.THE COMBINATION OF THESE RESULTS WILL PROVIDE A ROBUST KNOWLEDGE TO APPROACH THE MECHANISMS UNDERLYING THE BENEFITS OF INTERCROPPING AND DEVELOP TECHNOLOGIES TO MANAGE THE BENEFITS OF SYNERGIC BIOTIC INTERACTION. COOPERA WILL BE REMARKABLY TIMELY CONSIDERING THAT THE EU GREEN DEAL RECOGNIZES AGRICULTURE SUSTAINABILITY AS A SPECIFIC EUROPEAN BIOECONOMY CHALLENGE, ESTABLISHING AS A PRIORITY THE INVESTMENT IN DEVELOPING KNOWLEDGE THAT CAN CONTRIBUTE TO REDUCE FERTILIZATION AND CONTROL CONTAMINATION. THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS TOPIC IS ALSO RECOGNIZED AT A NATIONAL LEVEL, BEING CONSIDERED ONE OF THE EIGHT CHALLENGES INCLUDED IN THE PLAN ESTATAL DE CIENCIA, TECNOLOGIA E INVESTIGACION 5.
