ARQUEOLOGIA Y ARQUEOMETRIA APLICADAS AL ESTUDIO DE LA CERAMICA Y EL POBLAMIENTO DE LA CIUDAD ROMANA DE POLLENTIA Y SU HINTERLAND (MALLORCA, ISLAS BALEARES) THE PROJECT AIMS A COMPLETE STUDY, USING EXPERIMENTAL SCIENCES, OF THE CERAMIC RECORD AND THE SETTLEMENT PATTERNS FROM A DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE OF THE ROMAN AND LATE ANTIQUE CITY OF POLLENTIA (MALLORCA, BALEARIC ISLANDS) AND ITS H... THE PROJECT AIMS A COMPLETE STUDY, USING EXPERIMENTAL SCIENCES, OF THE CERAMIC RECORD AND THE SETTLEMENT PATTERNS FROM A DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE OF THE ROMAN AND LATE ANTIQUE CITY OF POLLENTIA (MALLORCA, BALEARIC ISLANDS) AND ITS HINTERLAND FROM THE ROMAN CONQUEST (123 BC), THROUGHOUT ANTIQUITY AND TO THE MIDDLE AGES. THE AIM IS TO UNDERSTAND THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE USING THE CERAMIC RECORD BASED ON COMPOSITIONAL DATA IN AN APPROACH NEVER ATTEMPTED BEFORE. THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND ANALYTICAL STUDY OF THE CERAMICS BOTH FROM THE CITY WILL CONCENTRATE IN KEY CONTEXTS AND MAINLY IN COMMON WARES, COOKING WARES, AND AMPHORAE. THE ANALYTICAL WORK INCLUDES A COMBINATION OF ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES SUCH AS CHEMICAL ANALYSIS BY XRF, MINERALOGICAL ANALYSIS BY XRD, AND OPTICAL MICROSCOPY USING THIN SECTIONS. THE ANALYTICAL WORK WILL BE COMPLETED WITH THE USE OF SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY AND MICROANALYSIS TO STUDY THE MATRIX AND THE SINTERING STAGE. THIS APPROACH INCLUDES INNOVATIVE ASPECTS SUCH AS THE USE OF PORTABLE XRF (P-XRF) FOR CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION. IN ADDITION, THE SURVEY OF POTENTIAL CLAYEY RAW MATERIALS IN THE AREA OF STUDY, AS WELL AS THE ETHNOARCHAEOLOGICAL AND ETNOARCHAEOMETRIC STUDY OF TRADITIONAL POTTERS, WILL HELP TO UNDERSTAND THE RAW MATERIALS AVAILABLE, THE OPERATIONAL SEQUENCE, AND TO TEST ASSUMPTIONS AND METHODS IN ARCHAEOMETRIC RESEARCH.THE STUDY OF THE HINTERLAND IS BASED ON THE STUDY OF CERAMICS AND THE SETTLEMENT PATTERNS USING LANDSCAPE ARCHAEOLOGY, INCLUDING FIELD SURVEY AND THE ADVANTAGE OF THE USE OF AFFORDABLE RPAS AND MINIATURIZED IMAGING SENSORS AND GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY TO DETECT AND TO BETTER DEFINE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES, AN APPROACH WHICH FEASIBILITY HAVE BEEN DEMONSTRATED IN THE PREVIOUS PROJECT DEVELOPED BY THE RESEARCH TEAM (ARCHREMOTELANDS). IN EXPLORING THE HINTERLAND, WE WILL TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE SETTLEMENT PATTERNS AND THE CERAMIC RECORD COMPARING ON AN ANALYTICAL BASIS THESE MATERIALS WITH THOSE CHARACTERIZED IN THE KEY CONTEXTS OF THE CITY, AND FINALLY COMPARING OUR CASE STUDY WITH OTHERS, PARTICULARLY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN ISLANDS.THE MAIN GOALS CAN BE CLEARLY DEFINED: A) TO UNDERSTAND THE CERAMIC PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION, AND CONSUMPTION FROM A DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF THE ROMAN CITY OF POLLENTIA TO ITS DISSOLUTION IN THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD AND ACROSS ITS HINTERLAND; B) TO FULLY ARCHAEOLOGICALLY AND ARCHAEOMETRICALLY CHARACTERIZE THE CERAMIC PRODUCTS USED IN THE ROMAN CITY AND ITS HINTERLAND IN A LONG-TERM PERSPECTIVE, USING ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES TO INVESTIGATE PROVENANCE AND TECHNOLOGY AIMING AT DEFINING THE LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND IMPORTED MATERIALS, EXPLORING MAINLY LOCAL PRODUCTION BUT ALSO INTRA-ISLAND, INTER-ISLANDS AND OFF-ISLAND DISTRIBUTION PATTERNS; C) TO STUDY THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE COUNTRYSIDE SURROUNDING THE CITY BETWEEN THE ROMAN PERIOD AND THE MIDDLE AGES, SERVING AS WELL AS SAMPLE FOR NORTHEASTERN MALLORCA TO BUILD ON PREVIOUS RESULTS OBTAINED IN OTHER PARTS OF THE ISLAND; D) TO DISSEMINATE THE RESULTS OF THE PROJECT IN DIFFERENT CONFERENCES AND PUBLISH THEM IN HIGH IMPACT SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS AND TO SOCIETY IN GENERAL; E) TO USE THE PROJECT AS A FORMATIVE PROGRAM FOCUSED ON INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES AIMED AT PROVIDING COMPETENCIES AND ROBUST SKILLS TO A NEW GENERATION OF YOUNG SCIENTISTS.
