IN MANY FIELDS OF APPLICATION OF (BIO)ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY SUCH AS MEDICINE, IT IS INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT TO HAVE SIMPLE-TO-USE ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTATION THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED IN ALL HOSPITALS AS POINT-OF-CARE (POC) SYSTEMS, SINCE FOR SOME DISEASES, ITS EVOLUTION DEPENDS ON THE INFORMATION OBTAINED THROUGH (BIO)CHEMICAL ANALYSIS.ANY DISEASE LEADING TO ACUTE OR CHRONIC LIVER FAILURE, INCLUDING TOXIC CONDITIONS (ALCOHOL, DRUG-INDUCED LIVER TOXICITY), VIRAL HEPATITIS, TUMORAL AND AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES, LEADS TO HIPERAMMONEMIA (HA), DEFINED AS INCREASED BLOOD AMMONIUM CONCENTRATIONS. MOREOVER, SOME GENETIC RARE CONDITIONS CAN ALSO PRESENT WITH HA AS THE MOST SEVERE COMPLICATION DURING ITS EVOLUTION. OVERALL, DISEASES PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED COULD AFFECT AROUND 2% OF THE POPULATION. WHEN TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE, AMMONIUM PATIENTS MONITORING IS ESSENTIAL FOR GOOD NEUROLOGICAL OUTCOME. NOWADAYS, ITS DETERMINATION IN PLASMA IS CARRIED OUT AT REFERENCE HOSPITALS WITH BIOCHEMICAL DETERMINATIONS, WHICH REQUIRE SPECIALIZED LABORATORIES AND TECHNIQUES NOT AVAILABLE EITHER IN MANY HOSPITALS OR IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE CENTRES AND PATIENTS ARE MONITORED ONLY EVERY 15-30 DAYS. THE AIM OF THE PRESENT PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT AND FULL VALIDATION IN HOSPITAL SETTINGS OF AN INNOVATIVE POTENTIOMETRIC POC ANALYSER FOR AMMONIUM MONITORING OF PATIENTS AFFECTED WITH DIFFERENT COMMON AND RARE DISEASES AND WITH COMMERCIAL PROSPECTING FOR HOSPITALS AND SOCIAL BENEFITS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF INEXPENSIVE AND EASY-TO-USE DEVICES FOR MEDICAL ENVIRONMENTS SUCH AS THIS POC AMMONIUM ANALYSER WILL ALLOW A MORE FREQUENT DISEASE FOLLOW-UP AND PROBABLY WILL IMPROVE LIFE QUALITY AND MINIMIZE THE NEUROLOGICAL DAMAGE OF PATIENTS. THE DEVELOPED EQUIPMENT SHOULD SERVE ALSO AS A DEMONSTRATOR TO PROMOTE OBTAINING A BATTERY OF OTHER POTENTIOMETRIC DESKTOP ANALYSERS, WHICH SHARE THE SAME STRUCTURAL BASIS BUT OTHER (BIO)SENSORS CUSTOMISED FOR OTHER DISEASES. MOREOVER, THE PROOF OF CONCEPT PROSPECTS TO OPEN THE DOORS FOR FUTURE HOME MEDICAL AMMONIUM DEVICES OPERATED BY THE PATIENTS THEMSELVES. OBTAINING SATISFACTORY RESULTS ON THE MONITORING OF AMMONIUM WILL REQUIRE ACTIONS AIMED AT PROTECTING INDUSTRIAL AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF A TECHNOLOGICAL TRANSFER, AN INITIAL MARKET ANALYSIS SEARCH HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT AND A TECHNOLOGICAL SURVEILLANCE STUDY WILL BE CARRIED OUT IDENTIFYING THE TARGET COMPANIES TO CONTACT.
