Civil Engineer (Polytechnic University of Valencia, 2008), MsC in Concrete Engineering (Polytechnic University of Valencia, 2011), PhD with an international mention in Construction Engineering (Polytechnic University of Valencia, 2013, Extraordinary Award).Currently, Dr Ruiz-Pinilla is part of the research group 'Construction and Structural Engineering’ (ConStruct) and he teaches structures at the University of the Balearic Islands. His research experience has focused on the study of the behaviour of reinforced concrete structures under seismic actions and on the development and analysis of experimental campaigns on the strengthening of columns and beam-column joints with different techniques. Its purpose is to reduce the vulnerability of damage or collapse of the structures under earthquakes events. His research currently focuses on the study of the applications of shape memory alloys in structural engineering. His research currently focuses on the study of the applications of shape memory alloys in structural engineering for the design of new constructions and to strengthen existing constructions. This material can provide the structures several advantages like ductility, strength and active confinement; very useful in concrete structures. This research consists of carrying out experimental tests and numerical modeling of the tests carried out. This work has made it possible to identify the critical points of its application in structures and the benefits that the material provides as active strengthening on structures. Throughout his professional career, he has worked in different areas of structural engineering. His experience in forensic structural engineering, stability of historic buildings, subway lines and stations, residential and industrial buildings, special foundations and precast structures among others. As a Structural Engineer, and regarding his professional experience, Dr Ruiz-Pinilla is committed to the generation of knowledge about new techniques in the construction and in the strengthening of existing structures, so better use of the materials can be achieved: effective, optimum and easy to execute. But overall, these researches want to make the constructions safe, durable and resilient.
