From the first years of university I approached the studies on Renaissance hieroglyphs and, more in general, on emblematic. This was going to be reconciled with my original passion, the one that brought me closer to the study of art history: iconography. Analyzing visual and also literary works (thanks to the exercise of ekphrasis) through iconographic tools pushes us to delve even deeper into the works, into the cultural, philosophical, historical, visual and commercial breeding ground in which they were conceived and they brought to light. My goal has always been to analyze the works beyond appearances, with a multidisciplinary approach, in which history, art history, iconography, iconology, philosophy, history of ideas, literature, anthropology and microhistory embrace each other. Renaissance hieroglyphics and, more generally, emblematics are literary disciplines that found great repercussions in visual works, where their elements were found as attributes and general themes. This is my main interest, that is, investigating emblematic reflections in art. However, to develop this objective, it has been necessary to investigate the renaissance of the hieroglyphic discipline, its theorization and applications in the Italian territory as well as its transmission to the Spanish culture and its territories. This has been the subject of my doctoral thesis, with which I have achieved several study goals. Among these, the definition of the term "hieroglyph" and its different use in the Spain of the first Baroque with respect to Italian culture, the birth and development of the doctrine on images and symbols in the Society of Jesus and the applications in the arts, both in Italy and Spain. In addition, following the iconographic theme and the multidisciplinary approach, I collaborated with the R&D research project "Slaves and servants of nobles and kings, 16th and 17th centuries" [Esclavos y criados de nobles y reyes, siglos XVI y XVII] with which I have approached the subject of slavery both from a historical (documentary) and visual point of view. In fact, analyzing the works of art of the past to obtain more data on the phenomenon has been a complicated task but one of which, thanks also to the ideation and implementation of a database that responds to iconographic logic and thanks to theteamwork in which different study experiences and approaches coincide, it has been possible to bring out new themes to deepen and investigate.Emblematic and, more generally, the study of works of art from iconographic criteria, on the most different themes, is my main interest and what spurs my work, always opening the door to new subjects.
