He received the MS degree in Electrical Engineering in 1995 from the Technical University of Madrid and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering in 1999 from the University of Alcalá (UAH). He is Full Professor at the Department of Electronics of the University of Alcalá (UAH) since 2011.He is Head of the RobeSafe Lab from 2010 and Director of the Advisory Committee for the Strategic Plan of the UAH. He was Director of Knowledge Transfer at the UAH (2014-2018) and coordinator of UAH Unit of Scientific Culture and Innovation (UCC+i) (2014-2018). Besides, he was Head of the Department of Electronics (2004-2010), co-coordinator of the Master Advanced Electronic Systems, Intelligent Systems (2007-2010), co-coordinator of the Doctorate program in Electronics (2005-2010) and Deputy Inspector of the UAH services (2012-2013). This course he is teaching the following subjects: Perception Systems included in the Master in Industrial Engineering, e-Safety Technologies belonging to the Master in Telecommunication Engineering, Intelligent Control Systems for the Degree in Computer Engineering and Computer Vision for the Degree in Telecommunication Technologies.He is author of more than 280 refereed papers in journals and international conferences, and corresponding author of 7 national patents and 1 PCT patent. Currently he has a Scholar Google h-index=42, a WoS h-index=29, a classic paper in the Transportation line included in Engineering and Computer Science area of the Google Scholar Metrics (GSM), and 4 main publications (1 x IEEE T Intelligent Transportation Systems journal, 1 x Intelligent Vehicles Symposium, 1 x IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference, 1 x IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems) in GSM (2016-2020). He was recognized as one of the most productive author in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) field, according to the H-Classic documents obtained from the WoS during the period 1996-2014. He is included in the ranking of top 5000 Spanish scientists (3117 position in 2020). He is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (July 2019- December 2021). He received the Institutional Lead Award 2019 from the IEEE ITS Society for the longstanding work of his research group. His research activity has been awarded/recognized with 28 prizes/recognitions related to Robotics and Automotive fields from 2004 to nowadays. He is Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on ITS, Lead Guest Editor of Multimedia Tools and Applications and habitual reviewer in several journals included in the JCR index. He was Guest Editor of two Special Issues (Sensors and IEEE T ITS), member of the Editorial Board of International Journal of Vehicular Technology (2012-2017) and he has served on Program/Organizing Committees in more than 20 conferences. He was Research Visitor at the Computer Vision Research Group of the Trinity College in Dublin (Irland) in 1998, Visiting Scholar at the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago (USA) in 2013, collaborating with Raquel Urtasun, and at the OPTIMAL Center Northwestern Polytechnic University (China) in 2017. He was co-founder of Vision Safety Technologies Ltd, a spin-off company established to commercialize computer vision systems for road infrastructure inspection (2009-2016).His research interests include real-time Computer Vision for Assistant Robotics and Intelligent Vehicles. He is currently focus on driver behaviors and scene understanding using Computer Vision and Deep Learning Techniques for autonomous vehicle applications.
