I am senior lecturer at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. I obtained my BA (1987) in Marine Biology at the University of La Laguna and my PhD (1993) in Biological Oceanography at the Faculty of Marine Sciences, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). I am member of the research group Biological Oceanography from 1998, but have also worked at the Centre of Marine Biotechnology of the ULPGC (2007-2010). I got a postdoc research contract (1996-1998) for the CANIGO European Union project, and carried out short stays in the CEAB-CSIC, Blanes, Spain (May-July, 1989), and the Institute of Marine Research, Mazatlan, Mexico (January-March, 1992). I have participated in about 20 research projects (being PI in one of them), and 6 oceanographic cruises in the Antarctic Ocean, Gulf of California, and Northeast Atlantic. I am co-author of more than 35 papers in high-end journals (h-index Scopus: 22) and over 30 symposia presentations. My research interests include the study of the links between plankton community structure, plankton metabolism (particularly microbial respiration) and the dynamic of the organic matter in the sea.
