Descripción del proyecto
The geometry of a structure determines its mechanical performance. Structural optimisation has become increasingly important in product development. It requires a loop of structural analysis and redesign until some optimum geometry is reached. Interfacing shape models between design and analysis is a serious limitation in today's geometry modelling industry and makes geometry optimisation expensive. We will investigate ways in which surface geometry for design and analysis can be modelled in the same framework. This will enable both design and analysis to be part of product development at a minimum cost in accuracy and time. We propose to explore a unified framework based on subdivision surfaces and to demonstrate the efficiency of Subdivision-based IsoGeometric Modelling Applied to Computer Aided Design and Engineering (SIGMACADE). The project will focus on the development of an automated optimised adaptation of subdivision surfaces for design and engineering purposes. The host will provide excellent training in finite element methods to complement the researcher's existing expertise in subdivision. The synergy of the researcher's expertise in subdivision and the host's experience in finite element modelling will provide the best possible environment for this project to succeed.
