Descripción del proyecto
THE NASA/ESA SOLAR ORBITER WILL BE THE FIRST MISSION IN REACHING THE CLOSEST APPROACH TO THE SUN GOING TO 0,28 AU. THE SCIENTIFIC POSSIBILITIES OF THE MISSION AND ITS IMPACT ON THE CURRENT STATE OF KNOWLEDGE ARE UNIQUE. THE ENERGETIC PARTICLE DETECTOR (EPD) WILL BE CRUCIAL IN THE NEXT 20 YEARS OF RESEARCH ON SOLAR ENERGETIC PARTICLES. THE SPACE RESEARCH GROUP HAS A WIDE EXPERIENCE IN SOLAR-TERRESTRIAL RELATIONSHIP STUDIES BOTH IN SCIENCE AND TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT WITH AN IMPORTANT INTERNATIONAL IMPACT SUPPORTED BY MORE THAN 40 PAPERS IN INTERNATIONAL REVIEWS AND BY OUR COLLABORATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SIX SATELLITE AND SPACECRAFT MISSIONS. PROF. DR. J. RODRIGUEZ-PACHECO OF THE SPACE RESEARCH GROUP OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ALCALA, SPAIN, IS LEADING THE EPD TEAM INTEGRATED BY RESEARCHERS FROM EUROPE, USA AND KOREA. DURING THE THREE YEARS OF THE PROJECT THAT WE ARE ASKING TO BE FUNDED IN THIS PROPOSAL, WE WILL CARRY OUT THE ACTIVITIES FOR THE SOLAR ORBITER PHASES C AND D THAT WILL END UP WITH THE DELIVERY TO ESA OF THE FLIGHT MODEL OF THE DIFFERENT UNITS THAT COMPRISE THE EPD INSTRUMENT BY THE END OF 2014. WE WANT TO POINT OUT, THAT THE DEVELOPMENT AND MANUFACTURE OF ONE OF THE UNITS ABOVE MENTIONED, THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL UNIT THAT PLAYS THE ROLE OF INTERFACE WITH THE SPACECRAFT, IS RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OTHER SUBPROJECT OF THIS PROPOSAL. TWO MAIN TASKS WILL BE PERFORMED IN THIS SUBPROJECT: SCIENCE AND PI MANAGEMENT. SCIENCE WISE, WE AIM TO PROVIDE SCIENTIFIC INPUTS TO THE TECHNICAL COUNTERPART OF THE TEAM IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE SENSOR EFFICIENCY AND ITS MANAGEMENT. HENCE OUR SCIENTIFIC MAIN GOALS ARE TO STUDY THE RADIATION ENVIRONMENT UNDER WHICH THE EPD WILL BE OPERATING THROUGH THE COMPLETE SOLAR ORBITER MISSION AND PARTICULARLY ABOUT THE SOLAR ENERGETIC PARTICLES (SEP) PEAK FLUXES AND FLUENCES AT PERIHELION; THAT IS, AT 0,28 AU. WE WILL ALSO PLAN TO DEVELOP A COMPLETE DATA BASE AND ITS SOFTWARE DATA ANALYSIS TOOLS IN ORDER TO PREPARE THE FUTURE EPD DATA CENTRE. FROM THE PI MANAGEMENT POINT OF VIEW AND BESIDES THOSE PIS RESPONSIBILITIES DESCRIBED IN THE ESA EID-A DOCUMENTATION, THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS SUBPROJECT IS TO GUARANTEE THE CORRECT DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY OF EPD EXPERIMENT AS A WHOLE, ACCORDING TO THE MODEL PHILOSOPHY, SCHEDULE AND BUDGET. TO ACHIEVE THIS OBJECTIVE, A SIGNIFICANT EFFORT IS NEEDED IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT, SYSTEM ENGINEERING AND PRODUCT ASSURANCE ACTIVITIES. DURING THIS PROJECT, WE PROPOSE THE SET UP THE EPD PROJECT OFFICE (PO), INTEGRATED BY SPECIALIZED STAFF IN THE AFOREMENTIONED DISCIPLINES. DR. M. PRIETO (SRG-UAH) HAS BEEN APPOINTED AS THE PROJECT MANAGER. BESIDES, WE PROPOSE TO SUBCONTRACT THE SYSTEM ENGINEER, PRODUCT AND QUALITY ASSURANCE AND AIV TASKS TO SPANISH COMPANIES WITH A WELL PROVEN EXPERIENCE IN SPACE ENGINEERING. THESE COMPANIES MUST BE CERTIFIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH INTERNATIONAL RECOGNIZED STANDARDS. THIS PROJECT WILL LET US TO MEASURE THE FLUXES, ENERGY AND COMPOSITION OF SEPS AT THE CLOSEST DISTANCE TO THE SUN AND THE BEST ACCURACY NEVER PERFORMED BEFORE. SOLAR ORBITER WILL BE AN ADVANCE OBSERVER OF SOLAR ACTIVITY AND SO ITS MEASUREMENTS WILL BE THE VERY FIRST WARM IN TERMS OF SPACE WEATHER AND KEY IN FUTURES WORKS ABOUT PROPAGATION AND ACCELERATION MECHANISM OF SEP. IT IS IMPORTANT TO POINT OUT THE BENEFITS IN EXPERIENCE AND KNOW-HOW THAT WE ARE GOING TO ACQUIRE THANKS TO LEAD AN INTERNATIONAL GROUP OF EXPERTS IN ENERGETIC PARTICLE DETECTORS AND THE SCIENCE DERIVED FROM THEIR MEASUREMENTS ELIOSFERA\MEDIO INTERPLANETARIO\VIENTO SOLAR\SOL\PARTICULAS ENERGETICAS SOLARES\MISIONES ESPACIALES
