THE CORES PROJECT AIMS AT INCREASING THE READINESS LEVELS OF OUR PATENT-PENDING COUPLED-CORE FIBER GRATING (CFG) SENSORS, AND, AT THE SAME TIME, TO ASSESS THEIR POTENTIAL FOR PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS AND COMMERCIAL VIABILITY. THE CFG SENSORS WERE INVENTED DURING THE EXECUTION OF MULTISENSE (OUR PREVIOUS PLAN NACIONAL PROJECT). THE MOST IMPORTANT DIFFERENTIATOR OF OUR SENSING DEVICES IS THAT THE REFLECTIVITY OF THE BRAGG GRATINGS VARIES DEPENDING ON HOW THE COUPLED-CORE FIBER BENDS IN TERMS OF BOTH BENDING DIRECTION AND BENDING DEGREE. HOWEVER, THE REFLECTIVITY OF THE BRAGG GRATINGS DOES NOT DEPEND UPON THE TEMPERATURE. REMARKABLY, CHANGES IN GRATING REFLECTIVITY CAN BE MONITORED AT HIGH SPEED (ONE THOUSAND TO ONE MILLION TIMES FASTER THAN CHANGES IN BRAGG WAVELENGTH) WITH AN INEXPENSIVE PHOTODETECTOR. THUS, OUR INVENTION MIGHT ENABLE MONITORING OF FAST DYNAMICAL EVENTS LIKE IMPACTS, VIBRATIONS, OR ULTRASOUND WITH HIGH TEMPORAL RESOLUTION, MAKING IT ATTRACTIVE IN SEVERAL FIELDS SUCH AS IN THE BIOMEDICAL SECTOR OR FOR A VARIETY OF INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS. AT THE END OF THE FIRST YEAR OF CORES, WE EXPECT TO HAVE READY-TO-USE PACKAGED SENSORS AND A DEMONSTRATOR OR PROTOTYPE OF AN INTERROGATOR FOR CFG SENSORS. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SECOND YEAR, WE WILL CONTACT A SPECIALIZED AGENCY TO CARRY OUT A MARKET ANALYSIS FOR OUR SENSING TECHNOLOGY. THE SECOND YEAR WILL BE DEVOTED TO VALIDATION OF OUR TECHNOLOGY WITH CERTIFIED PROCEDURES. AT THE END OF THE PROJECT, WE EXPECT TO HAVE ENOUGH RESULTS AND FEEDBACK TO LICENSE OUR PATENT AND/OR TO CREATE A SPIN OFF.
