THE USERS OF NOWADAYS MULTIMEDIA PRODUCTS AND SERVICES DAILY FACE DIFFERENT SITUATIONS IN TERMS OF VARIABLE PARAMETERS LIKE THE AVAILABLE BANDWIDTH, DISPLAY SIZE, DESIRED VIDEO QUALITY OR BATTERY LIFE, AMONG OTHERS, IN ORDER TO COPE WITH THIS NEW SCENARIO, THE STANDARDIZATION COMMITTEE KNOWN AS JOINT VIDEO TEAM (JVT), INITIATED IN 2003 THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW VIDEO CODING STANDARD NAMED SCALABLE VIDEO CODING (SVC), CONCEIVED AS A SCALABLE SOLUTION FOR DIFFERENT USERS THAT MAY HAVE DIFFERENT NEEDS, THE SVC STANDARD REPRESENTS AN EXTENSION OF THE SUCCESSFUL H,264/AVC STANDARD, AS IT MAINTAINS THE VIDEO CODING TECHNIQUES INTRODUCED IN THE H,264/AVC ENCODING LOOP BUT INCORPORATING A SET OF NOVEL TOOLS IN ORDER TO PROVIDE VIDEO ENCODERS AND DECODERS WITH THREE LEVELS OF SCALABILITY: TEMPORAL SCALABILITY, SPATIAL SCALABILITY, AND VIDEO QUALITY SCALABILITY, IN THIS SENSE, THE UNSURPASSED LEVELS OF PERFORMANCE GIVEN BY THE CODING CORE OF H,264/AVC, WHEN COMPARED WITH ITS PREDECESSOR STANDARDS, TOGETHER WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED SCALABILITY TOOLS, CONVERT THE SVC STANDARD IN THE STATE-OF-THE-ART SOLUTION FOR VIDEO COMPRESSION ENVIRONMENTS, THIS POWERFUL COMBINATION OF TOOLS TURNS THE SVC-BASED ENCODING AND DECODING OF VIDEO SIGNALS NOT ONLY INTO VARYING PROCESSES IN ACCORDANCE TO USER¿S NEEDS, BUT ALSO INTO AN EXTREME INTRINSIC COMPLEXITY,THE USE OF DYNAMIC RECONFIGURATION TECHNOLOGY IS INTRODUCED IN THIS PROJECT IN ORDER TO DEAL WITH THESE EXIGENT CHARACTERISTICS, EVEN MORE STRINGENT FOR REAL-TIME APPLICATIONS, IN PARTICULAR, THIS PROJECT PROPOSES THE USE OF AN AD-HOC SCALABLE NETWORK OF RECONFIGURABLE NODES ABLE TO COPE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS IMPOSED BY THE SVC STANDARD, THE RECONFIGURABILITY CONCEPT IS ENVISIONED WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THIS PROJECT IN A THREEFOLD MANNER: A) THE NODES ARE COMPOSED BY A SET OF RECONFIGURABLE PROCESSING ELEMENTS (PES) IN CHARGE OF PERFORMING THE COMPUTATIONS DEMANDED BY THE SVC STANDARD; B) PES COMMUNICATE BETWEEN THEM THROUGH A RECONFIGURABLE NETWORK-ON-CHIP (NOC); AND C) THESE NODES ARE COMMUNICATED BY A RECONFIGURABLE OFF-CHIP WIRELESS NETWORK, IN THIS WAY, THE FINAL INTEGRATION OF THE COMPUTATION INFRASTRUCTURE TOGETHER WITH THE ON-CHIP/OFF-CHIP COMMUNICATION NETWORK TO BE DEVELOPED IN THIS PROJECT, WILL PROVIDE A HIGHLY FLEXIBLE PLATFORM FOR SCALABLE VIDEO ENVIRONMENTS, IN PARTICULAR, THIS SUBPROJECT DEALS WITH THE RECONFIGURABILITY REQUIREMENTS OF ALL SYSTEM COMPONENTS AND THE ASSOCIATED RECONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT ASPECTS, THE GLOBAL COMMISSIONING ASPECTS AT NETWORK LEVEL, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NETWORK NODES, AND THE EXTENSION OF SCALABILITY TO INTELLIGENT DECISION SYSTEMS THAT WILL CONSUME SCALABLE VIDEO, hardware\SVC\NoC\reconfigurabilidad\multimedia\escalabilidad\redes inalámbricas
