Descripción del proyecto
MIBER (MOBILITY AND INTEGRATION IN THE IBERIAN COLONIAL SYSTEMS) EXAMINES THE INFLUENCE OF INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE AGENCY IN THE EXPANSION AND INTERCONNECTION OF THE PORTUGUESE AND SPANISH COLONIAL SYSTEMS DURING THE IBERIAN UNION (1580-1640), IT POSES THE CENTRAL RESEARCH QUESTION: HOW DID THE INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS DEVELOPED BY SPANISH MIGRANTS IN THE PORTUGUESE EMPIRE FACILITATE THE INTEGRATION OF THE TWO EMPIRES DURING THE YEARS OF THE UNION OF CROWNS? BY FOCUSING ON SPANISH AGENTS ACTIVE IN THE PORTUGUESE EMPIRE, MIBER WILL ASSESS THE ROLE OF INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE AGENTS IN THE EVOLUTION OF THE PORTUGUESE EMPIRE, AND ANALYSE HOW THE IBERIAN UNIONS ADMINISTRATIVE, COMMERCIAL AND COMMUNICATION INFRASTRUCTURES SHAPED DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS IDENTITIES, HABITUS AND STRATEGIES OF SOCIAL MOBILITY, THE PROJECT WILL EXAMINE HOW THE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND NETWORKS ESTABLISHED BY SPANISH MIGRANTS CONNECTED THE TWO EMPIRES AND MOULDED THEIR POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC STRUCTURES, MIBER WILL INVESTIGATE HOW THESE AGENTS AND THEIR NETWORKS (1) COLLABORATED AND CHALLENGED THE PORTUGUESE ADMINISTRATIVE AND JUDICIAL APPARATUS; (2) INFLUENCED THE FORMATION OF LOCAL ELITES; AND (3) NEGOTIATED THEIR IDENTITIES AND DISSEMINATED SHARED PRACTICES ACROSS THE IBERIAN EMPIRES, WHILE THIS PROJECT FOCUSES ON THE LITTLE-STUDIED ROLE OF SPANISH AGENTS IN THE PORTUGUESE EMPIRE, IT IS BY NO MEANS A DELIMITED INQUIRY, THROUGHOUT THIS PERIOD, THE COMMERCIAL AND MIGRATORY FLOWS BETWEEN THE TWO IBERIAN EMPIRES ENCOURAGED THE FORMATION OF LARGE AND INFLUENTIAL PORTUGUESE COMMUNITIES IN THE SPANISH OVERSEAS DOMINIONS, ESPECIALLY FROM THE CARIBBEAN ACROSS THE ISTHMUS OF PANAMA AND TO PERU, AN EXTENSIVE HISTORIOGRAPHY ON THE PORTUGUESE DIASPORA HAS EXPOSED HOW THESE COMMUNITIES ESTABLISHED PARTNERSHIPS WITH RELEVANT POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC ACTORS WHO INSTIGATED THE FORMATION OF LARGE COMMERCIAL, POLITICAL AND KINSHIP NETWORKS AND CONNECTED THE TWO EMPIRES, BY PROBING THE EVOLUTION OF SPANISH COMMUNITIES IN THE PORTUGUESE EMPIRE, MIBER WILL PROVIDE NEW KNOWLEDGE THAT WILL FACILITATE COMPARISONS BETWEEN THE TWO IBERIAN DIASPORAS, AND THEREBY OFFER A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PORTUGUESE AS WELL AS SPANISH MIGRANT COMMUNITIES, IN ADDITION TO THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DYNAMICS AND PROCESSES OF POLITICAL CHANGE IN BOTH COLONIAL SYSTEMS, INDEED, TO UNDERSTAND THE EXPERIENCES OF THE PORTUGUESE COMMUNITIES IN THE SPANISH COLONIAL TERRITORIES AND THE FACTORS THAT LED TO THE INTEGRATION AND SEPARATION OF THE TWO IBERIAN MONARCHIES, IT IS NECESSARY TO EXAMINE THE EVOLUTION OF THE STILL UNDEREXPLORED SPANISH AGENTS AND COMMUNITIES IN THE PORTUGUESE EMPIRE, EARLY MODERN HISTORY\GLOBAL HISTORY\IBERIAN GLOBALIZATION\EARLY MODERN MOBILITY\MIGRATION HISTORY
