THE OBJECT OF STUDY OF THIS RESEARCH PROPOSAL IS THE CONTRIBUTION FROM ARTISTIC RESEARCH TO UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE AND DYNAMICS OF THE LIMINAL SPACE THAT DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES HAVE CREATED BETWEEN THE VIRTUAL AND THE REAL. AT THE BASIS OF OUR ARGUMENT IS THAT DIGITAL ART IS NOT ONLY IDEALLY PLACED TO EXPLORE THESE NEW SPACES, BUT VERY NECESSARY IN ORDER TO HAVE APPROACHES, STRATEGIES AND RESPONSES TO IT THAT GO BEYOND ESTABLISHED AND COMMODIFIED PRACTICES, AND OFFER ALTERNATIVES THAT AIM AT PUSHING THESE POSSIBILITIES NOT FOR COMMERCIAL PROFIT BUT FOR CREATIVITY AND TOWARDS A MORE POSITIVE IMPACT ON SOCIETY. ALWAYS WITH A STRONG FOCUS ON INTERACTIVITY, WE HAVE ESTABLISHED TWO FIELDS OF STUDY: EXTENDED REALITY (XR) AND WHAT WE WILL CALL IN THIS PROPOSAL FREE FORM (FF) PROJECTS. THE FIRST IS AN ESTABLISHED FIELD THAT INCLUDES VIRTUAL REALITY (VR), AUGMENTED REALITY (AR), AND THE NOW MUCH LESS USED MIXED REALITY (MR). BY ITS VERY NATURE, IT IS A CREATIVE FIELD THAT VERY OFTEN DEALS WITH AND EXPLORES THIS LIMINAL TERRITORY WHERE THE REAL AND THE VIRTUAL MEET. IN CONTRAST, FREE FORM IS A DESCRIPTOR WE WILL USE TO ENCOMPASS DIGITAL ART INTERACTIVE PROJECTS THAT DEAL WITH THIS VERY SAME TERRITORY, BUT THAT DO NOT FALL WITHIN THE XR LABEL. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO MEET THIS CHALLENGE THROUGH THE STUDY OF DIGITAL ART AND INTERACTIVITY, WITH THE FOCUS ON XR AND FF WORKS THAT EXPLORE THE SPACE WHERE THE DIGITAL AND THE MATERIAL MEET. AT THE CORE, THERE IS THE UNDERSTANDING THAT ARTISTIC RESEARCH PRACTICES ARE A VALID STRATEGY FOR THE GENERATION OF KNOWLEDGE, WITH ITS OWN UNIQUE SPECIFICITIES. INDEED, SINCE ITS EARLY DAYS, THE ARTS HAVE CHALLENGED OUR ASSUMPTIONS ON THE USE OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES, AND PUSHED ITS LIMITS THROUGH ARTISTIC RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTATION, QUITE OFTEN PRECONFIGURING TECHNOLOGIES AND APPROACHES THAT WOULD THEN TAKE SEVERAL YEARS TO REACH THE ACADEMIC AND CORPORATE LABS, AND DECADES TO REACH THE GENERAL PUBLIC.FROM THIS PERSPECTIVE, INHYB WILL ANALYZE THE PROCESSES, METHODS AND OUTCOMES OF THIS ARTISTIC RESEARCH IN RELATION TO THE HYBRIDIZATION OF THE VIRTUAL AND THE PHYSICAL, WHILE EXPLORING THE CONTINUUM BETWEEN THE TWO WITH A PARTICULAR FOCUS ON IMMERSIVE AND INTERACTIVE MEDIA AS THE VEHICLE FOR THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE PARTICIPANTS IN THESE EXPERIENCES.WE ARE A HIGHLY INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM, COMPOSED OF RESEARCHERS WITH EXPERTISE IN MEDIA ARTS, DIGITAL ART CREATION, CURATION, INTERACTION DESIGN, PSYCHOLOGY, E-LEARNING, THE HUMANITIES, OR VR AMONG OTHER FIELDS. IN ADDITION, WE INCORPORATE THE KNOW-HOW OF WORKING IN AN ONLINE-ONLY UNIVERSITY, WHICH HAS INDEED ALREADY BEEN ENGAGING WITH THIS HYBRIDIZATION, PARTICULARLY THROUGH THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ONLINE DEGREES ON ARTS AND ON DESIGN AND DIGITAL CREATION. OUR EXPERTISE AND RESEARCH CAPACITY PLACES US IN AN IDEAL POSITION TO GENERATE A BODY OF KNOWLEDGE THAT WILL BECOME AN INVALUABLE RESOURCE ON ITS OWN, AS A TOOL FOR UNDERSTANDING THE PRESENT CHALLENGES OF THE NEW DIGITAL CONTEXT, BUT ALSO FOR FUTURE RESEARCH PROJECTS, BOTH THEORETICAL AND APPLIED, THAT CONTINUE TO ANALYSE AND PUT INTO PRACTICE THE KNOWLEDGE GENERATED THROUGH ARTISTIC RESEARCH.
