THE RECENTLY AVAILABLE SARS-COV-2 VACCINE HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLY EFFECTIVE WEAPON TO PUT AN END TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SARS-COV-2 VACCINE (AND ALL VACCINES) DRAMATICALLY DEPENDS ON ITS WIDESPREAD ADOPTION AMONG THE POPULATION, SO TO REACH A HERD IMMUNITY THRESHOLD ABLE TO STOP THE PROPAGATION OF THE DISEASE. SUCH A PIVOTAL GOAL IS CURRENTLY THREATENED BY THE SO-CALLED VACCINE HESITANCY IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES, ALREADY INCLUDED BY THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION IN THE 10 THREATS TO GLOBAL HEALTH IN 2019. ONE OF THE LEADING CAUSES OF VACCINE HESITANCY IS THE SPREAD OF MISINFORMATION N ONLINE SOCIAL MEDIA (OSM), SUCH AS CONSPIRACY THEORIES. IN CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS, SUCH AS THE VACCINATION DEBATE, USERS OF OSM ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE ECHO-CHAMBER EFFECT, HAVING THEIR BELIEFS REINFORCED THROUGH INTERACTIONS WITH LIKE-MINDED PEERS. ECHO CHAMBERS ABOUT VACCINES, REPORTED ON DIFFERENT OSM PLATFORMS, LEAD TO INFORMATION BIAS, FOR WHICH CERTAIN USERS WILL BE REACHED ONLY BY INFORMATION PROPAGATED BY ONE SIDE, AND SELDOM BY THE OTHER. ALTHOUGH SEVERAL MECHANISMS HAVE BEEN CONTEMPLATED TO EXPLAIN THE EMERGENCE OF INFORMATION DISTORTION, CAUSAL INFERENCE FROM OBSERVATIONAL DATA IS PROBLEMATIC. MOST APPROACHES BASED ON OSM DATA LACK THE LINKAGE WITH CONTROLLED EXPERIMENTS THAT CAN VALIDATE THE MECHANISMS AT THE CORE OF INFORMATION DISTORTION.THIS PROJECT IS AIMED AT OVERCOMING THESE LIMITATIONS: IT WILL ESTABLISH A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE ATTITUDE OF USERS IN THE ONLINE VACCINATION DEBATE AND THEIR BEHAVIOUR IN CONTROLLED EXPERIMENTS, ALLOWING US TO TEST HOW ECHO CHAMBERS IN POLARIZED SOCIAL NETWORKS CONSTRAIN THE FLOW OF INFORMATION. WE WILL I) DESIGN AND RUN EXPERIMENTS INVOLVING HUMAN SUBJECTS, II) COLLECT AND ANALYSE DATA FROM OSM WITH RESPECT TO THE VACCINATION DEBATE, AND III) MODEL THE MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR INFORMATION DISTORTION BY COMBINING DATA FROM OSM WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA. ECHO-CHAMBERS IN OSM HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO HAVE A DEEP IMPACT ON THE FORMATION OF USERS' OPINIONS ABOUT CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS, AN ISSUE OF UTTERMOST IMPORTANCE WHEN TOPICS ARE STRICTLY RELATED TO PUBLIC HEALTH, SUCH AS VACCINES. THEREFORE, THIS PROJECT WILL VALIDATE THE INFORMATION BIAS DUE TO ECHO-CHAMBERS IN THE ONLINE VACCINATION DEBATE, THROUGH EMPIRICAL EXPERIMENTS AND MACHINE LEARNING OPINIONS OF USERS IN OSM. ON MORE GENERAL GROUNDS, UNDERSTANDING THE EFFECTS OF ECHO-CHAMBERS IN ONLINE DEBATES IS A PIVOTAL TASK WELL BEYOND THE SPECIFIC TOPIC OF VACCINATION.THE PROJECT IS BASED ON THE EXPERIENCE OF THE PROPOSED PI AND HIS NETWORK OF INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATORS, AND WILL BENEFIT FROM THE EXISTING CONSOLIDATED GROUPS OF THE HOST INSTITUTION. WE AIM AT BRINGING TOGETHER EXPERTS ON THE DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES RELEVANT TO THIS PROJECT, FROM EXPERTS IN THE DESIGN AND REALIZATION OF EXPERIMENTS INVOLVING HUMAN SUBJECTS, TO EXPERTS IN THE MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF SPREADING PROCESSES. THUS, THROUGH THE COORDINATION OF THIS PROJECT, DR. STARNINI WILL OPEN UP A NEW LINE OF RESEARCH IN BARCELONA, CONSOLIDATING THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS OF THE RESEARCH CONDUCTED IN SPAIN, IN THE FIELD OF COMPUTATIONAL SOCIAL SCIENCE AND ITS MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPLICATIONS.
