The HERMES aims at developing a “Holistic dEcision suppoRt system for infrastructure ManagErS”. HERMES faces in an original and integrated way some of the major and most urgent challenges in transportation infrastructure management, namely the need of optimizing the management of bridges at a time of growing threats and the main challenges dealing with the adoption of SHM systems: The difficulties related to the interpretation of SHM results for structural health assessment, the scarcity of sensor-equipped structures in a portfolio of bridges, and the integration of SHM data into current decision support systems. The main focus of HERMES is on hydraulic risk, i.e., related to floods/scour, which is a major source of concern for decision-makers. HERMES takes advantage of innovative and advanced modeling tools (Bayesian Networks, Digital Twins, and Artificial intelligence - AI) to assist the decision-maker in structural management under operational and exceptional conditions. Using a unified platform, which receives continuous data from the entire network (e.g., vibration-based SHM data, water level, scour depth), it integrates these data into a virtual model of the network and its critical structures, assesses the state of such structures, and provides informed and optimal risk-based management plans. HERMES will be articulated in four main activities linked to specific Working Packages: A1: Scour depth inference through Bayesian Network modelling of the bridge network; A2: Implementation of Digital Twins of the bridges in the network; A3: AI-supported structural reliability assessment; A4: Risk assessment considering direct and indirect consequences and decision making. HERMES is expected to form the base for future research developments related to the topic of bridge management. It will help the EU to achieve safer and more reliable transportation of people and goods around Europe, with immeasurable and fundamentally important macroeconomic benefits for the EU.ver más
