Descripción del proyecto
GridEye agent-based distributed control for Home Energy Management System (GEHEMS) explores the theme of energy management for smart homes in the complementary environments of electrical distribution systems (EDSs) and smart grids (SGs). The EU priority of increasing the penetration of renewable energy resources (RERs) in power systems has led to the wide acceptance of the SG paradigm as the solution for several emerging challenges. Despite the significant investments in SGs and EDSs, the two fronts are evolving quite independently from each other. A relevant drawback returns to the role of endcustomers in the EDSs that should be changed from a passive consumer to an active market player. GEHEMS tackles this gap by proposing a two-level control approach in which each user is an agent that can manage its electricity consumption besides making decisions on its own available RERs and energy storage devices. GEHEMS is composed of: i) a low-level control model which makes the appliance start as soon as needed when its timing constraints are satisfied besides making the appliance activate at low-cost time intervals; and ii) a high-level control model which is based on an optimization problem at the end of each day that will be used to drive the activation decision of appliances for the next day. GridEye is a monitoring and control platform in EDSs developed by the host organization will be used for implementation of the proposed control and interaction with smart homes. GEHEMS’s quality and industry-driven nature is assured by the experience and complementary expertise of the candidate and host, and is further enhanced by the participation of experienced experts in the fields of power systems, computer science, communication, and control/automation engineering. Besides advancing in the multidisciplinary fields, GEHEMS is expected to impact the EU power sector, industry and society as a whole, by contributing to the effective integration of SGs in EDSs.
