Descripción del proyecto
THERE IS AN URGENT NEED FOR ENSURING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF WATER SYSTEMS AND ADOPTING ADEQUATE WATER MANAGEMENT POLICIES AND INNOVATIONS THAT FACILITATE THE ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY APPROACHES. INNOVATIONS IN WATER MANAGEMENT ARE NEEDED BUT EVEN MORE IN COUNTRIES LIKE SPAIN, WHERE CLIMATE CHANGE IS INEVITABLY LEADING TO PERIODS OF SEVERE DROUGHT AND WATER SCARCITY. FRESHWATER IS NEEDED IN FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE (FFV) PRODUCTION SYSTEMS NOT ONLY FOR CROP GROWING BUT ALSO FOR FOOD PROCESSING, WHERE WATER IS PARTICULARLY CRITICAL FOR SOME PROCESSING OPERATIONS SUCH AS BLANCHING OR IN DISINFECTION PROCESS DURING WASHING. THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION PROMOTES AN INTEGRATED WATER MANAGEMENT APPROACH, IN WHICH TREATED WASTEWATER FROM URBAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS (WWTPS) AND WASTEWATER FROM INDUSTRIAL OPERATIONS CAN REPRESENT ALTERNATIVE WATER SOURCES TO ALLEVIATE THE DEMAND FOR WATER IN FOOD PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING. AN IMPROVEMENT IN WATER MANAGEMENT, WITH RESEARCH ON ALTERNATIVE WATER RESOURCES, AS IS THE CASE OF RECLAIMED AND RECONDITIONED WATER, IS REQUIRED. THE DEVELOPMENT OF MORE EFFICIENT WATER DISINFECTION TECHNOLOGIES CAN FACILITATE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF WATER RECLAMATION (TREATMENT OF URBAN WASTEWATER) AND WATER RECONDITIONING (TREATMENT OF PROCESS WATER). THESE STRATEGIES ENABLE THE SELECTION OF APPROPRIATE SOURCES OF WATER FOR REUSE, IN A FIT-FOR-PURPOSE APPROACH, ACCORDING TO THE FAO/WHO. HOWEVER, THE USE OF RECLAIMED IRRIGATION WATER (PRIMARY PRODUCTION) AND RECONDITIONING OF PROCESS WATER (PROCESSING) CAN POSE A RISK OF CONTAMINATION OF FRESH PRODUCE WITH FOODBORNE PATHOGENS AND ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE AGENTS (E.G. ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE GENES (ARG) AND ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE BACTERIA (ARB)) MOSTLY BECAUSE THEY ARE CONSUMED RAW. A NEW EUROPEAN REGULATION HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED ON THE MINIMUM QUALITY REQUIREMENTS FOR WATER REUSE, WHICH IS CREATING BARRIERS DUE TO THE LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ON SUITABLE WATER DISINFECTION TECHNOLOGIES TO REDUCE THE PREVALENCE AND CONCENTRATION OF THESE RISKS. BASED ON THIS, THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE: 1) TO SELEC APPROPRIATE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE WATER DISINFECTION TECHNOLOGIES SUITABLE FOR RECLAMATION OF IRRIGATION WATER AND RECONDITIONING OF PROCESS WATER FROM THE FRESH PRODUCE INDUSTRY, TO MITIGATE THE SPREAD OF FOODBORNE PATHOGENS, ARB AND ARG; AND 2) TO DETERMINE THE SUITABILITY OF NEW INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES, SUCH AS NON-THERMAL ATMOSPHERIC PLASMA (NTAP)-BASED TECHNOLOGIES, TO OVERCOME SOME OF THE LIMITATIONS OF CURRENTLY USED OF WATER RECLAMATION AND RECONDITIONING STRATEGIES, FACILITATING WATER REUSE IN FFV PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING. THIS IS A COORDINATED PROJECT WHICH BRINGS TOGETHER THE CAPABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE OF TWO RESEARCH TEAMS WITH A DIFFERENTIATED APPROACH BUT COMPLEMENTARY EXPERTISE: MXQ/CEBAS-CSIC, WITH LARGE EXPERTISE ON WATER DISINFECTION AND SAFETY OF FRESH PRODUCE (SUBPROJECT 1); AND NEWTEC-ULE, WITH ~20 YEARS EXPERTISE ON PRESERVATION TECHNOLOGIES, AND, SPECIFICALLY, ON NTAP-BASED APPROACHES, AS WELL AS ON THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ROLE OF THE FOOD CHAIN AND ENVIRONMENT ON THE SPREAD OF ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE (SUBPROJECT 2). THE RESULTS EXPECTED WILL PROVIDE VALUABLE INFORMATION TO ENHANCE SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCTION THROUGH THE REDUCTION OF WATER NEEDS BY THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SAFE WATER RECLAMATION AND WATER RECONDITIONING STRATEGIES.
