Descripción del proyecto
OPTICAL NETWORKS ARE FACING INCREASED LEVELS OF HETEROGENEITY, FROM TYPES OF SERVICES TO THE RANGE OF TECHNOLOGIES INVOLVED. MOREOVER, SUCH HETEROGENEITY APPEARS AT BOTH INTRA-DOMAIN AND INTER-DOMAIN ENVIRONMENTS, THEREBY REQUIRING INTEGRATION AT VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LEVELS.THE INSTINCT COORDINATED PROJECT (INTERDOMAIN STRATEGIES IN OPTICAL CORE NETWORKS) FOCUSES ON THE INTER-DOMAIN HETEROGENEITY SCENARIO. HENCE, WE CONSIDER THE CASE OF A SET OF INTERCONNECTED NETWORK DOMAINS, EACH ONE USING ITS OWN OPTICAL NETWORKING TECHNOLOGY (WAVELENGTH-ROUTED OPTICAL NETWORKS, OPTICAL BURST SWITCHING, WAVELENGTH-ROUTED OPTICAL BURST SWITCHING OR HYBRID OPTICAL NETWORK) AND USING DIFFERENT GRANULARITIES. THE AIM OF THE WHOLE PROJECT IS TO PROPOSE AND ANALYZE STRATEGIES FOR THE EFFICIENT INTERCONNECTION OF THOSE HETEROGENEOUS NETWORKS AT THE OPTICAL LAYER, THUS REQUIRING HORIZONTAL INTEGRATION. THEREFORE, ROUTING AND PROVISIONING SOLUTIONS, AS WELL AS DATA AND CONTROL TRANSFER METHODS BETWEEN DIFFERENT DOMAINS WILL BE STUDIED WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF IMPROVING NETWORK PERFORMANCE IN TERMS OF PARAMETERS SUCH AS THROUGHPUT, LOSSES, BLOCKING PROBABILITIES OR END-TO-END DELAY.THE PROJECT IS COMPOSED BY TWO SUBPROJECTS, LED BY A TEAM FROM UNIVERSIDAD PUBLICA DE NAVARRA (UPNA) AND FROM UNIVERSIDAD DE VALLADOLID (UVA). BOTH TEAMS HAVE DEMONSTRATED BACKGROUND ON OPTICAL NETWORKING AND ON PERFORMANCE EVALUATION. MOREOVER, THEY HAVE COMPLEMENTARY EXPERTISE IN RESEARCH ON THE SWITCHING PARADIGMS INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT, AND HAVE DEVELOPED COMPLEMENTARY AD-HOC SIMULATORS.THE SUBPROJECT ¿INSTINCT: DATA AND CONTROL INTERCONNECTION¿, LED BY UNIVERSIDAD PUBLICA DE NAVARRA, AIMS AT PROPOSING AND ANALYZING DIFFERENT DATA AND CONTROL TRANSFER STRATEGIES IN INTERDOMAIN OPTICAL NETWORKS. THE INTERFACE BETWEEN OPTICAL DOMAINS AT DATA AND CONTROL LEVEL WILL BE EVALUATED IN ORDER TO PROVIDE THE BEST END-TO-END SERVICE IN THROUGHPUT, DELAY AND RESOURCES CONSUMPTION. RELATED WITH CONTROL TRAVERSAL, SCENARIOS WITH INDEPENDENT AND SHARED CONTROL BETWEEN DOMAINS WILL BE CONSIDERED. RELATED WITH DATA CONVERSION, SCENARIOS WITH ALL-OPTICAL AND ELECTRO-OPTICAL CONVERSION WILL BE ALSO CONSIDERED. THIS SUBPROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE ALSO AT A NUMBER OF JOINT OBJECTIVES OF THE WHOLE PROJECT, SUCH AS THE ANALYSIS OF THE STATE OF THE ART, THE DEFINITION OF THE MULTI-DOMAIN NETWORK SCENARIOS AND THE INTEGRATION OF THE COMPLEMENTARY SIMULATION TOOLS FROM THE TWO TEAMS. THE RESULTS OF THIS SUBPROJECT WILL BE INTEGRATED WITH THOSE OBTAINED BY THE TEAM FROM UVA, LEADING TO THE PROPOSAL AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF JOINT STRATEGIES FOR ROUTING, AND DATA AND CONTROL INTERCONNECTION IN MULTIDOMAIN CORE NETWORKS; THUS TACKLING TWO SIGNIFICANT DIFFICULTIES FOR ACHIEVING EFFICIENT INTER-DOMAIN INTEROPERABILITY.
