SEASONAL CLIMATE FORECASTING IS A FIELD WITH ENORMOUS POTENTIAL BENEFITS IN DIFFERENT SOCIO-ECONOMIC SECTORS, SUCH AS WATER RESOURCES, AGRICULTURE, HEALTH, AND ENERGY, YET, SKILLFULLY PREDICTING THE FLUCTUATIONS OF THE WINTER ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC SECTOR AND THE ASSOCIATED ANOMALOUS SURFACE CLIMATE CONDITIONS IN EUROPE CONTINUES TO BE A MAJOR CHALLENGE, PRE-ATLANTE AIMS AT EXPLORING THE INFLUENCE OF THE TWO LEADING TROPICAL ATLANTIC VARIABILITY (TAV) MODES, NAMELY THE SUBTROPICAL NORTH ATLANTIC MODE AND THE ATLANTIC NIÑO, ON THE NORTH ATLANTIC-EUROPEAN (NAE) REGION IN ORDER TO INCREASE CURRENT FORECASTING CAPABILITIES, THIS OBJECTIVE WILL BE ADDRESSED BY FOCUSING THE ANALYSIS ON EARLY WINTER, NOVEMBER TO JANUARY, WHICH IS THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN THE EXTRATROPICAL TELECONNECTIONS OF TAV ARE EXPECTED TO BE STRONGER, THE RESEARCH WILL IDENTIFY THE KEY MECHANISMS UNDERLYING THESE TROPICAL-EXTRATROPICAL TELECONNECTIONS IN THE ATLANTIC, WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON ELUCIDATING THE ROLE OF MIDLATITUDE AIR-SEA INTERACTION AND TROPOSPHERE-STRATOSPHERE COUPLING, THE SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVE OF PRE-ATLANTE IS TO ADVANCE THE SIMULATION AND PREDICTION OF THE NAE SURFACE CLIMATE ON SEASONAL TIME-SCALES, THE MAIN GOALS ARE TO GAIN INSIGHT INTO THE DYNAMICAL MECHANISMS AT WORK AND TO ASSESS THE ABILITY OF CURRENT SEASONAL FORECAST SYSTEMS IN REPRESENTING THE TAV-NAE TELECONNECTIONS, CLIMATE MODEL DEFICIENCIES AND BIASES, WHICH LEAD TO BOTH UNCERTAINTIES AND ERRORS IN THE FORECASTS, WILL ALSO BE INVESTIGATED, CONCRETE PLANS FOR SOCIETY OUTREACH, PROMOTING THE IMPACT AND DISSEMINATION OF RESULTS, WILL BE UNDERTAKEN IN A TARGETED WORK-PACKAGE, THE NOVELTIES OF PRE-ATLANTE ARE (I) THE EVALUATION OF UNTAPPED SOURCES OF PREDICTABILITY FOR THE EURO-ATLANTIC CLIMATE AND THE UNEXPLORED DYNAMICS RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT PREDICTABILITY, (II) THE ASSESSMENT OF THE TAV CONTRIBUTION TO PREDICTION SKILL OVER THE NAE REGION, AND (III) THE USE OF THE MOST COMPLETE SET OF OPERATIONAL SEASONAL FORECAST SYSTEMS, THE LATTER, IN PARTICULAR, ENSURES THAT THE OUTCOMES DERIVED FROM THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MEET USERS NEEDS, AS AN EXAMPLE, PRE-ATLANTE WILL DEVELOP A PROTOTYPE OF SURFACE UV-RADIATION FORECAST SYSTEM WITH POTENTIAL IMPACTS ON HUMAN HEALTH, VARIABILIDAD DEL ATLANTICO TROPICAL\DINAMICA TELECONEXIONES ATMOSFERICAS\PREDICCION CLIMATICA ESTACIONAL
