Descripción del proyecto
IN ORDER TO SATISFY CURRENT RESEARCHERS NEEDS, IN VIVO MOLECULAR IMAGING SYSTEMS HAVE TO IMPLEMENT NEW PROTOCOLS THAT SIMULTANEOUSLY REGISTER FUNCTIONAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL INFORMATION. THE CURRENT GOLD STANDARD FOR THIS KIND OF APPLICATIONS IS THE WELL-ESTABLISHED PET/CT (POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY / COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY) TECHNOLOGY. AS CT USES IONIZING RADIATION, MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) IS A STRONG COMPETITOR FOR ANATOMY IMAGING, BUT ITS COMBINED USE WITH PET IS PREVENTED BY THE FACT THAT THE MOST COMMON PET DETECTORS USE PHOTOMULTIPLIERS (PMT) WHICH ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE HIGH MAGNETIC FIELD USED IN MRI. THE SILICON PHOTOMULTIPLIER (SIPM) IS A NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT CAN SUBSTITUTE THE CONVENTIONAL PMT, AND IT IS A MATURE COMPONENT WITH DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS AROUND THE WORLD STARTING TO PRODUCE THEM REGULARLY. IN THIS PROJECT WE ARE PROPOSING TO DESIGN, BUILD AND CHARACTERIZE A NEW GAMMA-RAY DETECTOR FOR PET, COMPATIBLE WITH THE HIGH INTENSITY ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS USED IN MRI AND WITH COMPACT PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS SUCH THAT DETECTOR RINGS CAN BE INSERTED IN MR GANTRIES.THERE IS EVIDENCE IN THE LITERATURE THAT BACKUPS THIS PROPOSAL. THE RESULTING DEVICE WILL BE THE DETECTOR COMPONENT USED TO BUILD REAL HYBRID PET/MRI SYSTEMS THAT CAN REGISTER SIMULTANEOUSLY BOTH IMAGE MODALITIES ON THE SAME SUBJECT. A FINAL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEMONSTRATE THIS BY BUILDING A PROOF-OF-CONCEPT SYSTEM THAT COULD PRODUCE REAL IMAGES ON PHANTOMS. ALL THIS WORK WILL BE DONE IN A COORDINATED PROJECT BETWEEN TWO UNIVERSITIES, AND TWO COMPANIES (EPOS) WILL OVERLOOK THE WHOLE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATE THE POTENTIAL RESULTS FOR TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION.
