ASSESSING HOW CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES ARE AFFECTING COMMUNITIES STRONGLY DEPEND ON AN IN-DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF THE MECHANISMS THAT AFFECT THE STRUCTURE OF THOSE COMMUNITIES, FURTHERMORE, WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW THOSE MECHANISMS AFFECT THE NETWORK OF INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SPECIES BECAUSE FOR THE MOST PART COMMUNITIES HAVE NON-ADDITIVE PROPERTIES AND UNDERSTANDING SPECIES INDIVIDUAL RESPONSES DOES NOT SUFFICE,HOWEVER, THE EFFECT OF THE MECHANISMS IS COMPLEX AND INTRINSICALLY SCALE-DEPENDENT (IN SPACE AND TIME) AND IT IS STILL UNCLEAR WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF EACH MECHANISM AT THE DIFFERENT SCALES AND HOW DO THEY INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER, THIS PROJECT WILL FOCUS ON ASSESSING THE EFFECT OF PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSTRAINTS AND BIOTIC INTERACTIONS IN THE DIVERSITY AND COEXISTENCE OF A DIVERSE SET OF PLANT DOMINATED COMMUNITIES INCLUDING TAXONOMICALLY DISTANT ORGANISMS SUCH AS VASCULAR PLANTS AND BRYOPHYTES AND COMMUNITIES THAT ARE SUBJECT TO GRADIENTS AT DIFFERENT SPATIO-TEMPORAL SCALES, AND WE WILL DO SO BY COMBINING EXPERIMENTS AND OBSERVATIONAL FIELDWORK, THE PROPOSED RESEARCH PLAN INCLUDES A SET OF LARGE EXPERIMENTS THAT INVESTIGATES THE EFFECTS OF THE CONSTRAINTS IN NICHE CAUSED BY INTERACTIONS ALONG ENVIRONMENTAL GRADIENTS, THIS TYPE OF EXPERIMENTS ENTAIL SEVERAL TECHNICAL CHALLENGES, TO OVERCOME THEM WE WILL DEVELOP NEW LOW-COST EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND NOVEL ANALYSIS PIPELINES THAT WILL ALLOW US TO SUCCESSFULLY PERFORME THE REQUIRED EXPERIMENTS AND, AT THE SAME TIME WILL DRAW A PATH TO PUT ECOLOGICAL EXPERIMENTS IN THE WAY FOR THROUGHPUT SAMPLE PROCESSING, A METHODOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT THAT OVER THE MEAN TERM WILL ALLOW ASKING AND ANSWERING QUESTIONS AT AN UNPRECEDENTED SCALE, ECOLOGIA\BIOGEOGRAFIA\COMPETENCIA INTERESPECIFICA\ANALISIS DE IMAGEN\CIENCIA COMPUTACIONAL
