IN THE PRESENT PROPOSAL, IRTA (WWW,IRTA,CAT) COLLABORATING WITH AN SME, AN ASSOCIATION OF COMPANIES AND A TECHNOLOGICAL CENTRE, AIMS TO PROVIDE THE KNOW-HOW TO SUSTAINABLY CULTURE FLATHEAD GREY MULLET (MUGIL CEPHALUS), TO ACHIEVE THE BASES FOR SUSTAINABLE MULLET CULTURE, THE PROPOSAL WILL PROVIDE SOLUTIONS TO THE REPRODUCTIVE DYSFUNCTION THAT ARRESTS MATURATION IN THE EARLY STAGES OF GAMETOGENESIS AND EXAMINE THE USE OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY DIETARY INGREDIENTS THAT CAN BE USED IN PLACE OF DIETARY FISH MEAL AND FISH OIL THAT LIMIT SUSTAINABLE EXPANSION OF AQUACULTURE, TO INDUCE GAMETOGENESIS, HIGHLY BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE RECOMBINANT GONADOTROPINS PRODUCED WITH CHINESE HAMSTER CELLS (CHO) WILL BE USED TO OBTAIN VIABLE GAMETES AND LARVAE, THE PHYSIOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS INVOLVED IN GAMETOGENESIS AND ESPECIALLY THE OOCYTE MATURATION WILL BE INVESTIGATED TO INCREASE UNDERSTANDING OF BOTH FISH AND MAMMALIAN REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY, TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE REPRODUCTIVE DYSFUNCTION MATURATION WILL BE STUDIED IN WILD AND CAPTIVE FISH, USING DIFFERENT CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENTS TO STIMULATE THE PROGRESS OF MATURATION, IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED THAT THIS OMNIVOROUS / DETRITIVOROUS SPECIES DOES NOT REQUIRE DIETS THAT CONTAIN FISH MEAL AND FISH OIL AND THAT FEED MANAGEMENT WILL BE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PISCIVORE MARINE AQUACULTURE SPECIES, DIETS BASED ON THE INDUSTRIAL BY-PRODUCTS, BREWER’S YEAST, MACROALGAE AND FRUIT+VEGETABLE WILL BE TESTED TO EXAMINE THE EFFECTS ON GROWTH OF FLATHEAD GREY MULLET, IN ADDITION, FISH OIL SUBSTITUTION EXPERIMENTS WILL EXAMINE THE CAPACITY OF FLATHEAD GREY MULLET TO BIOSYTHESISE POLY- UNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS (PUFAS), LEVELS OF SELECTED TRANSCRIPTS WILL BE EXAMINED TO UNDERSTAND THE CAPACITY OF THE SPECIES TO DESATURATE AND ELONGATE FATTY ACIDS INTO LONG CHAIN PUFA, IN ADDITION TO RESEARCHING THE USE OF SUSTAINABLE DIETARY INGREDIENTS, THE FEEDING BEHAVIOUR AND WELFARE OF FLATHEAD GREY MULLET WILL BE EXAMINED TO DETERMINE IF FEED MANAGEMENT IN RELATION TO FEEDING BEHAVIOUR IMPROVES GROWTH AND FEED EFFICIENCY, ALTOGETHER, THE PROPOSAL AIMS TO ADVANCE SCIENCE IN MULTIDISCIPLINARY AREAS AND PROVIDE SOCIETY WITH A NEW HIGHLY SUSTAINABLE MARINE SPECIES THAT CAN BE CULTURED USING CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRINCIPALS TO MEET THE CHALLENGE 2: BIOECONOMY: SUSTAINABILITY OF PRIMARY AND FOREST PRODUCTION SYSTEMS, FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY, MARINE AND MARITIME RESEARCH AND BIOPRODUCTS (RETO 2: BIOECONOMIA: SOSTENIBILIDAD DE LOS SISTEMAS DE PRODUCCION PRIMARIA Y FORESTALES, SEGURIDAD Y CALIDAD ALIMENTARIA, INVESTIGACION MARINA Y MARITIMA Y BIOPRODUCTOS), MULLET\MUGIL CEPHALUS\REPRODUCTION\RECOMBINANT HORMONES\CIRCULAR ECONOMY\FEEDING\WELFARE\FISH BEHAVIOUR ver más
