Descripción del proyecto
In Europe, contaminated water, water distribution and premise plumbing systems are a significant source of many of Health
Care Associated Infections, and pose a significant threat to human health. Legionaires Disease, which is spread through
contaminated water particles, is estimated to cause 180–360 cases per million inhabitants in Europe alone with mortality
rates ranging from 10-25%.
It is estimated that the global legionella testing market will reach $352.6 million by 2025, with water testing the largest
testing type segment in terms of revenue, due to increased water testing activities in various industries as a preventive
measure to control infections. Current gold standard tests (bacterial culture-based) used to detect Legionella species are
slow and lack sensitivity. These are unsatisfactory, and have many limitations affecting results seen, and have an onward
impact on human health.
BioProbe Diagnostics (BPD), is a recently established Irish diagnostics company, specialising in the detection of
environmental pathogens (http://bioprobedx.com/). We have developed a novel rapid single test kit (Bio-LP-1) to address the
current limitations and unmet Legionella testing market needs. Bio-LP-1 allows for the rapid (< 5 hr), quantitative,
simultaneous and identification of Legionella species, Legionella pneumophilla and Lp-sg1 in water, allowing for a faster,
more accurate, robust test, quickly identifying harmful water samples, with the potential to positively impact on human health.
To close the gap from lab to market, BPD seeks to use this feasibility study to accredit Bio-LP-1 to ensure market
acceptance. This study will also include a feasibility assessment with respect to product manufacturing and distribution
supply chain. Upon completion of this feasibility study, BPD will be in a position to launch their first product to market, while
also determining opportunities for company growth and development over the next 3 years.
