Presbyopia is a progressive loss of near vision that occurs in people after the age of 40. Presbyopia is caused by the irreversible, age-dependent weakening of the ciliary muscles that allow us to focus on objects that are close to us or far away. In presbyopia patients the eye lens loses its ability to round up to focus on near objects.
Almost 2 billion people are affected by presbyopia all over the world. In Europe over 209 million people suffer it, 44% of the total population. Unfortunately, this percentage will keep increasing to reach 50% by 2030. From an economic perspective, only in the US the loss of productivity caused by presbyopia in 2011 amounted to $11B.
Progressive lenses are the best solution to correct presbyopia because they provide clear vision at all distances. However, they need to be tailor-made, significantly increasing their price. Moreover, these lenses introduce distortions in the vision and require a long habituation time to be used comfortably. These flaws are intrinsic to the current methods of designing lenses, that do not consider optical and anatomical characteristics of every user; instead they estimate them using standard values.
Lentitech, a start-up company funded in Spain, patented a solution to design 100% personalized progressive lenses. ErgoFocus is composed of a measuring device that takes measurements of the user’s facial and optical parameters, a software that interprets the data and a set of advanced algorithms that design progressive lenses based on these measurements. The Ergofocus design shortens the habituation time and minimize visual aberrations.
Our product has a great opportunity of successful commercialization because the number of users of progressive lenses is increasing exponentially as the global population ages. As a matter of facts, the global eye glasses and contact lenses market, is expected to generate revenue of $72.60B by 2023 and progressive eye glasses capture more than 60% of the total market.
