THE ATOMIC PROJECT WILL PERFORM THE FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH STEPS SERVING AS A BASIS FOR THE SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENT OF A LONG-HAUL COHERENT OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS TRANSCEIVER FRONT-END, MONOLITHICALLY INTEGRATED ON INDIUM PHOSPHIDE PHOTONIC INTEGRATION TECHNOLOGY,FROM A TOP-DOWN PERSPECTIVE, THE OPTICAL INTERNETWORKING FORUM (OIF) HAS SELECTED POLARIZATION MULTIPLEXED QUATERNARY PHASE SHIFT KEYING (PM-QPSK) COMBINED MULTIPLEXING AND MODULATION TECHNIQUE AS THE REPLACEMENT OF CURRENT 10 GB/S ON-OFF KEYING (OOK) SYSTEMS, A LINE RATE PER CHANNEL INCREASE FACTOR OF 10 (10 GB/S TO 100 GB/S) IS THE OIF TARGET, WHERE PM-QPSK WILL PROVIDE SMALL IMPACT IN THE CURRENTLY DEPLOYED OPTICAL NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE,FROM A BOTTOM-UP PERSPECTIVE, MONOLITHIC INTEGRATION OF THE REQUIRED COMPONENTS ON A SINGLE PHOTONIC CHIP, AS THE EVOLUTION OF THE CURRENTLY USED DISCRETE COMPONENT ASSEMBLY, OR PACKAGING INTEGRATION, HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A MUST BY MAJOR COMPANIES AND RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS, THROUGH ORGANIZATIONS AS THE OPTOELECTRONIC INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION (OIDA) IN USA, AND THE TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS EMERGED AFTER THE EUROPEAN NETWORK OF EXCELLENCE ON PHOTONIC INTEGRATED COMPONENTS AND CIRCUITS (EPIXNET) IN EUROPE,THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO PERFORM THE FIRSTS RESEARCH STUDIES TO BRING ON TO A SINGLE PHOTONIC CHIP THE MOST OF THE COMPONENTS TO REALIZE A PM-QPSK TRANSCEIVER OPTICAL FRONT-END, WITH THE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE GENERIC INTEGRATION TECHNOLOGY,
