Descripción del proyecto
In motorsport, practice is the key to success at all levels. However, more practice demands more financial resources. Due to budget limitations and the need to moderate teams’ race preparation efforts, the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) - Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) enforced stricter regulations on teams’ amount of permitted in-season testing by limiting it to at most 10 private test days plus a couple of official test events in January and February. This is not enough for racing teams and drivers to hone their skills. In response, they are resorting to the use of Driver in the Loop (DIL) simulators. Despite significantly contributing to the closing of the practice gap, current simulators suffer from inconsistencies between driver’s actions and what they experience, sensations which are not a true reflection of those in a real car, use hexapod systems which are less suitable for vehicle dynamics studies. They also suffer from motion sickness with the driver having to take frequent breaks from the simulator. To address these challenges, SkyDrive S.r.l has developed a professional high calibre simulator system (AveHIL) based on the use of mathematical models to integrate racing teams, the driver and the engineer in a seamless manner and offer them an accident free platform to learn, master and develop their racing career. They also enjoy the same level of situational awareness as in a real race car countless times with no greenhouse gas emissions. Teams can learn new tracks, practice manoeuvres and test setup changes virtually before taking their cars on to the actual track. To ensure a realistic experience, our solution comes with 4 degrees of freedom, real throttle, braking pedals, and master cylinders, World Series Tub, 42 Nm torque and a vacuum auto adaptive seat. The successful commercialisation of EveHIL enhance SkyDrive’s growth by increasing revenues to €12.7 million with an ROI of 4.28 five years post commercialisation.
